As her laughter settled, she heard Nickle sigh. "Anyone who does not like music is not really a complete human. There are just times I don't think its appropriate, depending on someone's mood." A smile returned to his face as he continued. "But tonight, it is the right time. It's a time to inspire people during these dark ages. So I will sing too." Yumi wasn't quite sure that she was satisfied with this answer, but she knew it was the best one she was going to get. She realised what an effort it must have been for someone with an ego as big as Nickle's to stoop so low as to explain his actions to a near-stranger, so she appreciated the gesture. Next moment, however, she received a shock. "That was a very beautiful song," came the man's unexpected compliment. Yumi was caught totally off-guard. She had never anticipated that he might go so far! "Th-thank you," she finally stammered out. "I thought it was appropriate for the situation, that's all... In a different scenario, I would have chosen differently. One of my real favourites. Maybe one day I can show y-" She was interrupted mid-word by an unexpected commotion on stage. Some woman she had never seen before was leaping across the rooftops, stealing the show. Dominique someone-or-other. “Hey…I saw her in the train station in the World of Darkness…” Nickle mused by Yumi's side. "Oh... really?" It was a bit rude what the newcomer had done, butting in out of turn, but it wasn't disastrous really. At least she had a decent voice. Dominique was most of the way through her song when chaos erupted. It seemed that the girl who had been scheduled to go next was quite a stage-hogger herself... before anyone quite knew what had happened, the strains of a very different song were audible for all to hear. The matter didn't stop there, however, as Dominique immediately retaliated, starting her song from scratch. Yumi felt rather exasperated. This had been intended as an inspirational evening of hope and goodwill, and because of two attention-obsessed girls, Star's efforts might be ruined. Nickle clearly felt the same way, as he kept his eyes locked on the stage. "This is becoming a battle royal. Excuse me Yumi, but I think I'd better put a stop to this before it gets more out of hand." "Um, not a problem, you go ahead," she said, but he had already gently moved passed her and was weaving his way through the crowd towards the stage. Then he did his trick with the electricity again. Yumi was secretly pleased to confirm her suspicions from that night when they had first met. She knew it hadn't just been a coincidence. No, he had deliberately killed the lights that night to escape from her challenge. Coward. Maybe he was all talk after all... Smooth compliments and an air of supreme confidence, yet no substance underneath. Yumi didn't really know him well enough yet to judge, but she knew one thing for sure. First impressions were hard to erase, and this man had done a fairly awful job on his. He would have to work hard if he wanted to earn back her respect. Not that... he would necessarily... be interested enough in her... to go to such effort. Yumi brought herself sharply back down to earth from the lofty heights she had been lounging in. After all, who was she to him? Just some annoying girl who wouldn't cut him any slack. Yumi suddenly saw things from his perspective, and she had to ask herself. Was she interested in him? Was he important enough to her that she could consider swallowing her pride and allowing him to retain his? It was a tough question, one for which she had to search deep inside herself to find the answer. While she was searching her soul for some grand revelation, Yumi watched as Nickle attempted to break up the cat fight which had broken out on stage. It seemed his tactics of brute force were relatively effective, as before long the two girls were happily united in revenge against him, performing a beautiful duet. It seemed that Nickle had saved the day... er, night. Well, that was certainly a point in his favour. As the primadonnas finished their stint in the spotlight and Star took over the microphone once more, Yumi couldn't help but laugh. 'That guy over there whose name I don't know yet!' was a magnificent introduction for Nickle, perfectly befitting his stature. She snorted as she imagined the wound to his pride. All such caustic thoughts were cut short, however, as the first strains of Nickle's chosen song rang out across the crowd. Yumi was shocked. He had picked such a beautiful piece! Her jaw dropped further as the man opened his mouth and began the haunting vocals. She was mesmerised by the sweet melody, forgetting to close her mouth until the very last note had died away. With one song, her opinion of the man had totally altered. It wasn't just that he had chosen such a powerful piece... no, it was the emotion with which he had sung it. Yumi could tell that he was thinking of his lost loved ones. She felt a tear pricking her eyes, and for once did not try to fight it. She had her answer now. She was sure of her feelings. This man... he was special. No matter how frustratingly shallow he might come across, there were clearly layers of depth buried beneath his extravagant exterior. Yumi would swallow her pride. She wanted to get to know the real Nickle, the man behind the mask. It was worth humbling herself for that. She just hoped he would come and say goodbye to her before disappearing again into the night. There was no telling when the next time they would see each other would be, after all. The last singer for the night Yumi recognised from Arcadia, but she didn't pay altogether too much attention to her performance. After the deep emotions she had just experienced through Nickle's song, it was hard to focus on anything else. She vaguely registered the interesting beat of Xuanmeng's song, but most of her attention was devoted to searching for Nickle in the crowd. She had lost him when he had left the stage. As Star finally called an end to the festivities, Yumi was still distracted. It would have been the ultimate irony if Nickle disappeared just as she decided she wanted to truly befriend him. Well, there wasn't much she could do now, except stay put. He knew where she was, after all, so there wasn't much sense in moving until the crowd had cleared out and she could tell for sure that he was gone. For now, she still could cling to the hope that he was still around... |
