"Okay... note to self, never go investigating black spheres in craters in the middle of a street, ever again..." A certain girl with purple hair muttered under her breath as she walked down the street. Strangely for her though, despite the Victorian design of the surroundings most of the people she passed by were dressed in modern-day fashions, so the T-shirt, jeans and sneakers she was wearing don't seem too out of place, although here and there she'd occasionally pass by someone in some exotic, otherworldly outfits. Well, serves herself right for letting her curiosity get the better of her.

"This is definitely not Domino Town..." Jen commented as she looked around, before looking up at the perpetual night sky of Traverse Town. She hated to admit it, but she was lost - sure, she'd gotten lost before, and had always managed to find her way back, but this time was different. It wasn't merely a matter of being in the wrong district, a wrong town or even a wrong country. This was a totally different world altogether, and it didn't take her long to figure out this was not the world AHS was located in. The purple-haired American spent the next hour wandering the streets of this Victorian-styled city, asking around for directions; some of the people just passed her rudely, while some of them answered her questions - but one word she kept hearing - Traverse Town.

"So that's where I am..." Jen mused, before a ringtone caught her attention; it was none other than her own phone ringing. She would need some more solid answers though; what is Traverse Town? What are the Heartless? These names she kept hearing over and over from the denizens of Traverse Town.

"Hello?" Jen answered the phone. "Yes dad? No, I will not be home for dinner. Actually... I will not be home for quite some time." The purple-haired girl sighed at her father's questions over the phone. "Uh, tell you what... this is a long story, so I'll explain later when I know more about my current situation, okay? In the meantime, we'll keep in touch. If mum ever calls... tell mum that Jen loves her." Sighing again, Jen kept her phone - miraculously, despite the lack of cellphone providers in Traverse Town her phone still linked back to her own realm.

Stopping by the pavement, Jen took a while to take stock of her surroundings, and realized that she had just stopped next to what might've been a herbalist's stall. This was when Jen gasped as she looked at who was manning the stall, for there at the shop counter was a face that she couldn't have possibly forgotten - a face she'd seen once so often back home. "Xiao Yang?" Jen muttered as she made a move towards the shop entrance.

"All I have is this..." He placed a doohickey on her desk. "Is it worth anything to you?"
Of all things for a man to be carrying as his world was gobbled up by shadowy monsters... this guy had a radio.
"I'm sorry." On the other side of the desk, she was negotiating prices while sitting on a box of bananas. "But business is bad right now, so I can't just give you my goods for free."
"Please.. My daughter is ill. The Pokemon hospital cannot heal her."
"..." The bottom of her lip scrunched a little as she eyed the item. "You.. You will teach me how to use it, won't you?"
Coming from a place where iPods and cellphones ruled the world, to a place where radios didn't exist at all, it was somewhat of a transition to use this old time tune box.

----

Late in the starry afternoon, in this cursed timeless place, she was fiddling with the knobs and buttons wearing a weary expression on her face. She was looking for tunes, but all that was coming through was static.
"Ripped off by another costumer..." Yang sighed heavily, leaving the old contraption be, and resting her chin onto her elbow. Peering up from her dismal posture, she spied a perky teen aged girl wandering towards the herb-stall, and put on her best poker face. "Alright, no more little Miss push over." She said under her breath, before,
"Greetings madam," The sugary, sweetened, syrupy voice must have instantly rotted away her wide toothy grin. "How may I help you?"

Jen stood back and watched as a man came up to the herbalist's stall and traded in a transistor radio for some herbal medicine. After the transaction was complete, the purple-haired girl walked towards the counter, manned by a familiar-looking girl. "Greetings madam," the young herbalist in what appeared to be an ancient Japanese outfit greeted as Jen approached. "How may I help you?"

Jen's eyes widened as she studied the other girl's features - yes, there was no mistaking it; other than that period dress she'd adopted and that her hair had returned to its natural black color there was no doubt that this other girl is Hua Xiao Yang, one of the first friends that Jennifer made when she enrolled in AHS; who ironically hails from AHS' rival campus, St. Lilliana's Academy.

"小羊!" (Xiao Yang) Jen exclaimed happily in Mandarin, calling her good friend by her pet name, a broad smile quickly forming on her lips as she spread her arms out. "Fancy seeing you here!" Jen continued in a tone of pleasant surprise.

"Man... how did you end up here?" The purple-haired girl asked, scrutinizing the wares on display at the counter. "I mean, we haven't seen each other for a couple of months... but look at you, it's like you've been away for years! I could barely recognize you with that makeover you've been through!" As far as Jen was concerned, there was a lot of catching up to do between the two friends...

"小羊!" The doppelganger shouted out,
"Now SEE here little Miss-" About to give the girl a stern telling of manners, Yang was quickly interrupted by a giddy,
"Fancy seeing you here!"
"Goodness! Jen? Is it really you?" She answered dumbly, before mimicking Jen's excited tone. "Talk about a blast from the past!"
"Man... how did you end up here?"
"Hee hee hee." She was far too caught up in glee to reply verbally.
"I mean, we haven't seen each other for a couple of months... but look at you, it's like you've been away for years! I could barely recognize you with that makeover you've been through!" She brought up a few good points.
"Hahaha yes! You on the other hand, haven't changed one bit." She followed, with a twinkle in her eye, after Jen had finished.
Indeed, there was a monster load of catching up chatter to do, but she was at an absolute loss where to start. And when Yang had no answers, her best friend Jen would have developed about three possible (and quite feasible,) theories.
"I don't know much-" Well, that much was true, "But this feels is something much bigger than that Amalgamation class we took back in Spring..."

Jen chuckled at Yang's response to her appearance - seems like seeing her in Traverse Town was what the Chinese girl wasn't expecting, but however unexpected, it certainly came as a pleasant surprise. Jen's smile widened into a grin as she leaned forward, resting her arms on the counter. "Well, I was in Domino Town until a few hours ago," Jen said in regards to Yang's comment on how she hadn't changed one bit - indeed, Jen's modern street wear certainly bore a stark contrast to Yang's period Japanese dress. To a casual observer, it was hard to believe that the two girls were friends who had only months ago attended the same school, and hung out in town together after classes for desserts, shopping, karaoke and other activities. "See, I was on my way to take a bus from Domino Town to Tokyo to spend the weekend with my dad, and then I decided to investigate a black sphere in the middle of a crater that appeared in the middle of the street... and the next thing I know is, I'm now in this strange place they call Traverse Town..." Jen gave Yang a summary on how she ended up in Traverse Town.

"I don't know much-" Yang replied, "But this feels is something much bigger than that Amalgamation class we took back in Spring..."

"Aye, this is no virtual simulation, that I can be certain," Jen said as she straightened up, resting her chin thoughtfully against her left hand. "I was kinda hoping that you'd be able to tell me more about this place and about the Heartless, though... I dunno, seeing how you appear to have been here longer than I have," the purple-haired girl took note of her friend's style of dress, which was more revealing (though at the same time tasteful and elegant) than anything she'd remembered seeing Yang in, and it certainly brought out a certain beauty that had otherwise gone unnoticed. "You've certainly gotten a lot prettier, though," Jen commented, winking at Yang.

Once Jen perked up and away from her fragrant herbs, Yang absent mindedly straightened a root back in line as she umhmm'ed and ahh'ed thoughtfully, "...Yes."
"I was kinda hoping that you'd be able to tell me more about this place and about the Heartless, though... I dunno, seeing how you appear to have been here longer than I have,"
"Heartless, is that what they're called.." Yang whispered under the chime of Jen's voice. "Oh I've no idea how long I've been gone. Haven't really been counting the days." She paused with a purse of her lips before gesturing towards the midnight sky. "Not like I can, right?"
They both paused, taking the opportunity to check each other out.
"You've certainly gotten a lot prettier, though," Said the pretty purple haired girl.
"Oh hahah, it must be the hair." Came her old light chuckle. Even though she really had no words for her teeny bopping friend, "And you... You look fine, considering you've just been shot through multiple univers--"

Posted ImageA Mr.Mime has entered the courtyard and begins performing his 'stuck in a box,' routine.

Baffled at first, Yang's wide eyed gaze soon softens into a girlish giggle.
"Oh Jen! heehee~ Look! It's you!" She teased, and collected herself before, "I wonder if I'll run into my parallel here.."

"Heartless, is that what they're called..." Yang replied, her voice a thin whisper, as if the Chinese girl didn't want to mention the word too loudly. "Oh I've no idea how long I've been gone. Haven't really been counting the days." She paused with a purse of her lips before gesturing towards the midnight sky. "Not like I can, right?"

"Ah well," Jennifer sighed. For once, she was kind of hoping that Yang actually knew something she didn't. "You're saying the sky is perpetually night?" Jen asked as she looked up, before glancing at her wristwatch. Weird... the purple-haired girl thought; but true to what Yang said, she didn't have a way to tell the time. For one, checking her watch was useless as Traverse Town doesn't belong in the same time zone as Tokyo; heck, they aren't even in the same world! Perhaps, later she would try asking around to see what is the standard time for Traverse Town. But for now, catching up with her old friend comes first.

"Oh hahah, it must be the hair." Yang gave her usual lighthearted chuckle upon hearing Jen's compliments about her newfound beauty.

"I think it's the clothes, though," Jen interjected, a wry smile on her lips as she folded her arms across her chest. "I mean, that's a really chic getup compared to what I used to see you in..."

"And you... You look fine, considering you've just been shot through multiple univers--" Before Yang could finish her statement, a Pokemon which Jennifer immediately identified as Mr. Mime appeared, performing the mime routine known as 'The Box'.

"Is that a Pokemon? For real!?" Jen exclaimed, blinking in disbelief. She'd only seen Pokemon in anime and games - is this an actual Mr. Mime and not some cosplayer? And apparently, Yang was just as baffled by the unexpected arrival of the Pokemon, although the Chinese girl quickly overcame the amazement and began to take a good-natured rib at her friend.

"Oh Jen! heehee~ Look! It's you!" She teased, giggling girlishly, and collected herself before continuing, "I wonder if I'll run into my parallel here.."

"I'm really not seeing the resemblance here Yang," Jen replied, chuckling. "I've always thought of myself as more of a Alakazam person... and speak of your parallel... I think I see it!" Jen giggled playfully as she pointed to the far end of the courtyard, where two Pokemon trainers were getting ready for a Pokemon battle, and Jen's finger pointed to the Hitmonlee who was getting ready to battle a Machoke, the former warming up by performing a series of high kicks, while the Machoke's trainer appeared to be giving some tactical advice to his fighting type Pokemon, giving the Machoke an encouraging pat on the shoulder before taking a step back and watching with his arms folded across his chest.

"Oh Jen! heehee~ Look! It's you! I wonder if I'll run into my parallel here.."
"Mime! Mime!"
"I'm really not seeing the resemblance here Yang," Jen spoke through giggles.
"MiiIIIiiimmee..." He packed up his invisible gear, and left.
"You don't? Why, doesn't his purple charm remind you of yourself?" Yang asked.
"I've always thought of myself as more of a Alakazam person... and speak of your parallel... I think I see it!" Zhen pointed happily towards the trainers.
"What are you talking about? That thing has a horrid figure!" She cried out, scrunching her features in a despondent way.

Posted Image Hitmonlee begins warming up with a string of high kicks.

"-Oh!" Her tone, which had been sulky, quickly changed into one full of energy and excitement. She practically bounced off her box of bananas, and clasped her hands under her chin. "Jen!" She clapped, "My money's on Sticks."

Who will emerge victorious...?

"What are you talking about? That thing has a horrid figure!" Yang's expression at Jen thinking that her Pokemon equivalent was a Hitmonlee was... classic, and Jen couldn't help but chuckle. The Chinese girl's expression changed quickly however, when she soon noticed what the Pokemon's fighting style was. Yang pretty much jumped off from the box she was sitting on, hands clasped under her chin like a gushing fangirl. "Jen! My money's on Sticks." Yang clapped, quickly naming the Hitmonlee after her St. Lily's code name.

"Hmmm..." Jen rested her chin on her right hand and her right below on her left hand as she watched the two Pokemon and their trainers go through their final preparations before the square off. "That's a tough call - it depends on the levels of the Pokemon and the tactics employed by their respective trainers. I mean, Machoke is freakishly strong in the muscles department, and I think Hitmonlee's going down if he takes so much as one direct, unguarded hit. On the other hand, Hitmonlee may have some hidden surprises in store for his opponent, especially if his trainer actually taught him punch techniques back in his Tyrogue phase such as Mach Punch and Fire Punch."

"But, Pokemon battles aside..." Jen turned her attention back to Yang's kiosk, towards the transistor radio. "Were you having trouble with that earlier?" Jen pointed to the radio that a man traded in earlier for herbal medicine. "I couldn't help but notice just now what you were doing with it." A smile crossed the purple-haired girl's lips at the thought of having the opportunity to do one of her favorite things involving hardware.

"That's a tough call - it depends on the levels [...] such as Mach Punch and Fire Punch." Poke-savvy Jen informed.
"uhuh, uhuh..." Yang replied absent mindedly, her eyes stuck to the battle.
Probably sensing her friend's ignorance, Jen suggested, "But, Pokemon battles aside..."
"shh! Its starting!"
Hitmonlee: Hwa!
"Were you having trouble with that earlier?" Jen continued.
"I'm sorry, what!?" She spoke abruptly, suddenly brought back by Jen's voice. Considering Stick's dumbfounded gaze, her question might have needed more elaboration.
Her large black eyes had followed Jen's finger pointing to the old radio,
"I couldn't help but notice just now what you were doing with it." Jen offered.
"What, this stupid thing? It's just junk! All I wanted was to find a nice song, but it doesn't even work. Huff." She complained, struming a twangy chord by flicking the antenna. "That is the LAST time I give out freebies."

"There, there, just let me take a look at that, shall we?" Jen clucked sympathetically amid Yang's complaints as she took the radio from Yang. The purple-haired girl's sugary smile quickly transformed into a 'serious business' game face as she unshouldered her bag, and opened it up to retrieve her portable toolkit.

"Screwdriver!" Jen declared as she took out a small ratchet screwdriver with interchangeable chrome-vanadium bits, slotting in a Phillip-head screwdriver bit and quickly got down to removing the screws that hold the dark-gray polystyrene housing together. Once the last of the screws were removed, Jen lightly tapped on the housing to open it up, exposing the circuits within.

"Multimeter!" Jen chirped again as she put aside her screwdriver and procured a digital multimeter, setting the device on 'Continuity' mode to check for open circuits.

"Now that's strange..." Jen commented as she took multimeter readings at various probe points on the circuit board. "I don't think there's anything wrong with the device." The purple-haired girl furrowed a bemused eyebrow as she performed her multimeter readings again to double-check. But she was beyond doubt that there were no damages to the device.

"The radio is in perfect working condition..." Jen said as she put the tools aside. "This could only mean one thing..." The American huffed. "There are no radio stations in this place." Jen pouted her lips as she folded her arms across her chest.

Just as Jen sprang to 'can we fix-it?' mode, Yang also appeared to lighten up a little.
"Screwdriver!"
"Excuse me?" Yang gasped as the radio bust open.
"Multimeter!"
"Ohhh, so you can fix it!" Finally catching on...
... tap tap tap.
"Now that's strange..."
"What? Whats strange?"
"I don't think there's anything wrong with the device." Jen declared.
"What?!?Why?"
"The radio is in perfect working condition... This could only mean one thing..." My dear Watson, was what she'd meant to say at the end. "There are no radio stations in this place."
Silence plagued the stall as Yang stared, slack jawed, at her gizmo whiz of a friend before, "That's a terrible diagnosis!!" She exclaimed in dispair, joining JenJen in her crossed arm posture. So convinced that there was NO WAY in this world the radio was going to work now, Hua XiaoYang cursed under her breath. "..Dirty player."
"If only he'd offered me a microphone. Then I could have shout back at him and say: YOU PAY ME MUNNY!" She mimed her actions by holding her hand up to her mouth, but not exactly raising her voice above normal conversation. "At the very least then, I could just sing to myself."

For a moment there was a grave-like silence as Yang stared at Jen, slack jawed. "Hey Yang, are you okay?" Jen asked as she waved her right hand in front of Yang's face.

"That's a terrible diagnosis!!" Yang suddenly exclaimed, despair in her voice as she copied Jen's crossed arms posture. "..Dirty player." the Chinese girl cursed under her breath as Jen continued to hold the disassembled radio in her hands, examining it intently.

"If only he'd offered me a microphone. Then I could have shout back at him and say: YOU PAY ME MUNNY!" As Yang ranted on, Jen reached into her bag to remove an MP3 player.

"I think I've finally found a use for this," Jen mused as she fiddled with the MP3 player's controls - she'd picked this one up during her usual routine of salvaging workable junk, and seeing the radio just gave the purple-haired girl ideas.

"At the very least then, I could just sing to myself." Yang pouted as Jen rested a hand on the other girl's shoulder, patting her reassuringly.

"Don't despair, Yang. Jen's got a solution!" The purple-haired girl chorused as she held up the MP3 player. "One moment, please..." Jen said as she took the MP3 player and the disassembled radio and placed them upon the counter on Yang's stall and retrieved her tools, setting to work on the two devices placed before her...

An hour later, Jen looked up at Yang with a triumphant smile and raised the fruit of her labor - with some rewiring of the two devices' circuits, Jen had managed to combine the old transistor radio with an MP3 player in a bizarre marriage between retro-tech and modern technology! "I know it looks strange," Jen pointed to the panel on the front of the frankenradio (portmanteau of Frankenstein and radio) which bore the controls of the MP3 player, displaying the menu on a blue luminous LCD display. "But it works!" Jen's smile widened into a grin as she cycled through the song selection menu, and played a song at random.

Two-Mix: Just Communication

"Ta-daa!" Jen cheered as the music blared from the speaker. "I apologize for the music quality, though," the purple-haired girl stuck out her tongue. "I don't have the parts to turn this into a stereo system, so you'll have to make do with mono aural... but hey, with over 2 gigabytes worth of songs on this baby you probably won't get bored cycling through the entire list!" Jen twirled her screwdriver about before replacing it into her portable toolkit.

"Besides, see this thing?" Jen pointed to a flip switch installed onto the top of the frankenradio. "This thing switches between MP3 player and transistor radio - so you can tune in should this place eventually get a radio station. You can keep this with my blessings." The purple-haired girl grinned as she placed the frankenradio in front of Yang.

"I know it looks strange, But it works!" Jen declared.
Yang was about to take another bite out of this alien looking apple, but instead chose to eye Jen's wondrous amazing contraption. "But what does it do...?"
And then out of the old school speaker, came a strange but familiar sound.
"Ta-daa!"
"It plays meeueuuuuuuuusic!" Sticks cheered under that synthesized beat. "Goodness, with you around, I'll need not ever, have to marry a man!" She tilted her head with a bright smile.

With a giddy grin on her face, she engrossed herself in the playlist, and need not show her praise verbally.
"Besides, see this thing?" Jen pointed to the tippy top.
"Yes, I do now." She replied, looking up from the player.
"This thing switches between MP3 player and transistor radio - so you can tune in should this place eventually get a radio station. You can keep this with my blessings." Jen further explained, leaving the radio-creation-monster thing under Yang's care.
"Oh ZhenZhen, I will cherish him, as if it were my own," She joked earnestly, placing a hand over her chest she stood up off her box of banana seat and pulled out an apple from it. "I have no munnys to pay you, as I have been jibbed one too many times. But please, have my most prized possession as thanks!"

Jen glowed with pride as Yang heaped on the praises. "It plays meeueuuuuuuuusic!" the Chinese girl cheered like a squeeing fangirl under the song's electronic beat. "Goodness, with you around, I'll need not ever, have to marry a man!" Yang tilted her head and flashed her purple-haired friend a sunny smile that would probably scare Heartless off with its radiance.

"Hehe, I would rather not think about the innuendo behind the second part, Yang," Jen giggled nervously, scratching the back of her head gently while Yang continued to marvel at Jen's handiwork.

"Oh ZhenZhen, I will cherish him, as if it were my own," Yang replied, and despite the joking tone of her voice Jen could tell that it was a statement made in earnest as like a demure lady Yang rested a hand across her chest while she spoke, eliciting further chuckles from the purple-haired American.

"I have no munnys to pay you, as I have been jibbed one too many times. But please, have my most prized possession as thanks!" Yang said as she stood up from the box of bananas that served as her seat and from within it took out... an apple. It was truly a fine apple, with crisp, smooth skin that emitted a beautiful gloss - almost too pretty to eat, Jen might put it - but still an apple nonetheless.

"Thanks," Jen replied, flashing Yang a sugary grin as she took hold of the apple in her hand, carefully examining it, her brows furrowed in thought as her expression shifted to a serious one.

There was a slight pause before Yang shot Jen another question, "Where are you staying? Or will you be leaving like the..." Jen blinked, and Yang continued, "Like the heroes..."

"Well..." Jen rubbed the back of her head. "The thing is, I just arrived here in Traverse Town, so I haven't gotten a roof over my head. But no worries Yang, we'll keep in contact - you set up shop around these parts, right?" Jen asked as she looked around, trying to familiarize herself with the backdrop of this particular street in the First District.
