Yumi watched on eagerly as the Erinyes #4 she had attacked plummeted out of the sky. At first she dared to hope that the fall had knocked the monster permanently out of commission, but it quickly became obvious that the beast was now merely enraged and looking to attack her with purpose. Yumi had at least succeeded in one thing, however - now that Erinyes #4 was on the ground, the playing field had been levelled. The creature no longer had the height advantage of being airborne. There was another, unexpected bonus as well. The fact that the monster had landed directly in a thick clump of vegetation meant that Yumi suddenly had mounds of ready-made firepower within critical distance of Erinyes #4. Moving quickly, before the creature could advance too far towards her and render her attacks useless, Yumi pointed her finger once more and made a sweeping motion with her hand, encompassing the monster entirely with the movement. Next moment, it seemed like half the forest blew up, as every piece of solid timber in the immediate area became a lethal projectile. The tricky part though was to only explode items that were behind the enemy - the last thing Yumi needed was for one of her fellow Arcadians to be caught in friendly fire. It was a much more ambitious assault than anything the girl had attempted in the past. She had really gone all-out, straining her powers to create as large a bang as possible. She had probably overdone it, exploding entire trees, and the bruises all over her body would give her hell for the next few days. But it was quite essential really for this attack to be successful. Although Jameson had taught her close-quarters combat, Yumi didn't much fancy pitting her bare skin against those claws on the beast. And her method of exploding atoms was not much use if the enemy were so close she got injured in the cross-fire. As she waited for the smoke to clear and the splinters to stop flying again, Yumi sincerely hoped that Erinyes #4 was down and out. If not, she might just have to call for assistance... and would possibly die of shame in the process. On the other hand, if she had managed to defeat this creature all on her own, that would be quite an impressive achievement for a first-time fighter like herself. A feat to be proud of. Two possible outcomes, each at opposite extremes... All Yumi could do was crouch behind a nearby tree to await the results of her previous barrage - and hope for the best. |

OoC: Sorry for taking so long! Erin had hardly been prepared for the icy lance that shot at him from so near. "Damn." He reacted as it fired. That was hardly fast enough, but it was all that he managed. The lance slashed his side. He took a breath. He had expected the Erinyes to bound at him or something. A spell shooting through his cloud was something else all together. He rose up slowly. The cloud over his head swirled darkly. He was actually pretty angry right now. A bolt of lightning shot from the cloud above him, hitting the one in front of him and them jumping again toward the Erinyes who had attacked him. |

"Oh... Yeah... I am..." Erin was injured. The fact that the Erinyes that struck at him was dead immediately calmed his mind. The cloud over his head slowly lightened back to white. He was a bit surprised by the sudden call over what seemed like a minor injury. He graciously thanked the ESPer who healed him. Being injured was never a pleasant experience after all. He gently put his hand on his side where he had been injured. He would have to get a new coat he supposed. Well, he could deal with that later. He whistled to Ryo. "I'm borrowing your stuff, Ryo." Ryo's electricity was always useful for him. It was probably a bit rude siphon it off, but Ryo wasn't doing anything with it. A chain of clouds formed between Ryo and the dying Erinyes impaled on the statue. The lightning leapt along them until it jolted at Erinyes #6. |

There was a quick slashing sound followed by a thud, as Meglumar turned away from the Erinyes, his eyes closed, and his sword covered in blood. Well, it seemed these foes were mindless, and feral. Perfectly okay to him that these beings die. "Understood." He said to Lavender, swinging his sword once to get the putrid blood off his blade, and then sheathing it once again. The sheathe was a cheap one, and he was hoping to not ruin it any time soon. "Erinyes slain." He said, quite grateful it didn't get him ~*~*~*~ Damon watched on as Miyuki finished off the enemy. While he was a bit unhappy on not being able to end that abomination's life himself, he was at least happy to see Miyuki's powers grow. He walked over to the girl, and gave her a pat on the head. "Nice job, newbie." He said, happy to see Chizu's time with the girl was doing some good. It looked like now with the Erinyes' slain, there was nothing more to do. Looks like things might just be looking up for them. A group that more or less worked well together. The sorcerer was probably in for one hell of a fight. That book was as good as theirs. |

The crumbling noise near her puzzled Yumi for a moment, until the smoke cleared up and it suddenly became apparent that the trees she had destroyed in her all-out attack on the Erinyes had in fact supported a pillar - one which was now breaking apart close to where she stood. She quickly went to move away from the area, but realised that it was luckily falling in another direction. As for Erinyes #4, it seemed Yumi had created some char-grilled monster. As she looked around and realised that there was not even a body left, with some feathers and dismembered limbs the only remains, it began to dawn on her just how much she had overreacted. Lavender reinforced this message loud and clear. "I see Jameson trained you well," Lavender said as she stepped over the remnants of the pillar, flashing Yumi a smile and giving the younger girl a thumbs-up. "You still need more practice in maintaining your composure and judging the situation, though." "Right, yes ma'am, understood. I'll do better next time..." Hanging her head in shame, Yumi reflected that it could have been worse. Overkill was better than not getting the job done at all, after all. And besides, it was to be expected really, that she would make mistakes in her very first combat. It would have been some sort of freakish miracle if everything had gone off without a hitch. Rather, this gave her a measuring point from which to improve. She realised now that not all enemies were ultra powerful and did not require her full abilities to defeat. Still, it was clear that Yumi had a lot to learn still about control and the proper harnessing of her power. The strong-willed girl was determined to improve, however - and improve quickly. She would continue training every day. And in the meantime, during this mission, she would just have to adapt on the spot to changing situations, gaining valuable in-field experience. With a bit of determination and a lot of hard work, she was sure to learn quickly. "You okay?" Lavender suddenly asked her, apparently worried for her safety. Flashing her commander a grin and a double thumbs up, she assured the purple-haired woman that she was perfectly fine. "Just a few scratches from flying splinters, and the regular bruises... but they're both my own fault, and to be expected." She would recover from both easily enough, with time. Yumi then glanced around the clearing to see how the others had fared. It seemed they had all done very well for themselves, defeating all the monsters successfully with only one of their team getting injured. And with Erin already receiving treatment, the mission could probably be labelled a success so far. Smiling happily, Yumi sent a quick "Good job, everyone" over the mental link. She was proud to be fighting beside these competent people. "All right, let's wrap things up here and move on before more of Kadjerak's patrols show up!" Lavender commanded as she raised her right hand to signal to the Arcadians present. Yumi moved to follow the Arcadian leader out of the clearing. |

Chizu landed on the ground as her Erinyes was impaled and later finished off by Erin, a small grin on her face. At the same time, Star straightened up, blowing on the tip of her hand and examining her nails as if that attack had barely taken anything out of her. The blond photomancer grinned, placing her hand on her hip as Lavender called them all back to continue the mission. "And that, love, is that,~" she said with a small smile towards Meglumar as she drew him away from the death and destruction and back towards the mission and the objective. The blood and the smell was quite literally about to make her sick, but Star was nothing if not a very good actress. "Let's get this show on the road." "Agreed," said Chizu from behind Star as she got up off the ground and dusted herself off. She wrinkled her nose at the smell of the dead Erinyes's behind her. If this was Kadjerak's work, then they needed to get that book back from him fast. She grinned at Miyuki as she passed her on the way back towards Lavender. "Nice work," she said as they began walking again. |

The remaining Erinyes were swiftly taken out, one of them meeting her end at the edge of Meglumar's blade as she attempted to mount one final assault on the swordsman, who promptly sliced into the beast's neck. Using his clouds as a conduit for Ryo's lightning, Erin delivered a devastating shock to the Erinyes impaled on the statue's spear, the slain creature crumbling away as black ash, while the one slain by Meglumar dissolved into a foul-smelling puddle. "You all did well indeed," Lavender nodded her assent to Yumi's statement. "But don't let it get to your heads." The purple-haired Esper signaled Louis to tend to Yumi with his healing ability, treating part of the girl's bruises before moving on, now that all injuries on the team had been taken care of. "Erinyes aren't something that someone who 'dabbles' in necromancy can raise," Selene commented, sharing with the rest her knowledge of arcane lore as she turned her head away from the stinking puddle of gunge that was once an Erinyes, eager to avoid its foul odor. "They're the kind of things you'd normally see in the retinue of experienced necromancers." It was a little hard to believe how Kadjerak had gone from mere skeletons and zombies to vile creatures like the Erinyes in so short a period of time. "It must be the book... he must've improved on his necromancy by studying it," Lavender replied as the team moved on through the ruins. "Still, this doesn't look good - I was expecting more than just a few patrols. This could either mean Kadjerak has hidden aces up his sleeve..." "Or he might be just supremely confident of his newfound abilities, he probably thinks he's invincible and doesn't need to surround himself with armies of undead bodyguards." Louis said as he moved ahead of the rest of the group. "Let's hope this is the case, as we can use his arrogance against him." The group continued on through the ruins, making good progress - at this point no undead patrols appeared to impede them. After a good half-hour of careful trekking, the group arrived at the outer walls of an ancient fortress compound - the fortifications are pockmarked with holes and had trees growing out from fissures and crevices, the product of centuries of neglect. Despite the forlorn state of the structure, the walls still appeared sturdy enough to withstand at least a couple more shots from a trebuchet. "It looks like they're throwing us an open invitation..." Louis commented as he surveyed the fortress with a pair of combat viewers. The ancient drawbridge was lowered across the silt-laden moat - the once-mighty timbers were infested by termites and rot, but still sturdy enough to support the weight of troops marching across it, although treading with caution would still be advised. "I don't like the looks of this... when it seems too easy you know things are never what they seem." "We could seek out an alternative approach," Lavender added as she made her way to her scout's side, pointing over to what appeared to be a sewer grating on the other side of the moat, although it would mean wading through knee-deep muddy water, and God knows what nasty surprises may lie beneath its murky surface. "I think this calls for us to split up," Lavender concluded, crossing her arms over her chest. "I see..." Louis added. "My take on this would be to send a group with heavy firepower in through the front entrance as a diversion, while a smaller, stealthy group make a covert entrance through the sewers to flank the enemy." "So, what's it going to be then?" Lavender asked herself, taking some time to plan out the possible entrance tactics.

Chizu and Star followed Lavender and Louis through the woods towards Kadjerak's fort. As they walked, Chizu noted the lack of any sort of resistance. She frowned, folding her arms and looking around. After that whole show with the Erinyes, and what Selene said about them, it didn't really make any sense that he wouldn't try to stop them anymore. The sight of the fortress with its gates wide open just asking them to come in was even more troubling. What do you think? Aether asked her. ...I think he's got all his forces inside, around him, said Chizu as Lavender and Louis began looking around and coming up with a plan. That's the only explanation I can think of.... As usual, Aether went quiet, which could mean that he was either disappointed or impressed with her answer. It was hard to tell with him. She looked up as Lavender gave them the choice to stay or go, thinking about it. It's likely that he has all his forces waiting inside... said Aether while she was thinking. Chizu nodded once. That's true...so... "I'll help retrieve the tome," she said to Lavender and Louis. It might seem out of character for her to not want to participate in a flashy display, but this wasn't exactly fun and games here. They needed that book back, and she knew that she was fast and her element of choice was pretty much invisible. She was fit for this stealth mission...although she wasn't too keen on going into the sewers...again. For Star, meanwhile, the decision was a no-brainer. "I'll help storm the castle!" she said, raising her hand in the air and jumping up once. "After all, my attacks are some of the flashiest." She giggled somewhat and then turned to face Meglumar. "What about you, love?" she asked. |

"Seeing as how I have ninja powers, I'll help steal the tome and flank the enemy," Ryo said. Go time.Ryo thought. Got it. Roger. Ryo raised his hand in front of him and Model S stopped as he floated in front of Ryo's palm. A bright light erupted from Model S as a black soul floated into Model S. Immediately, the white light turned black and Ryo transformed into DSM. |

Yumi was surprised when Louis began to heal her minor injuries. She was so used to these bruises appearing every time she activated her power that they had become second nature to her. Because she trained every day, at any given time her skin would be patterned with a vast array of blues, greys and yellows as bruises of all different shapes, sizes and intensity adorned her body. She had become so accustomed to them that they barely seemed like injuries at all these days. So, she was caught rather off-guard when Lavender thought they needed to be tended to. Still, Yumi was not one to complain about free healing, and after Louis was done the girl could not stop marvelling at how refreshed she felt. She treasured the feeling, knowing it would not last long in a mission of this scale. Trudging through the woods after Louis and Lavender, Yumi couldn't help but wonder with trepidation what nasty surprises lay in store for them next. Sure, she had signed up for this mission, volunteered to be a part of Arcadia. But it had been out of a desire to be useful in some way, to be less of a burden on others, rather than some hung-ho motivation to defeat as many bad guys as possible. She knew it was time for her to stop relying on Jameson so much and become more independent - but that didn't mean she had become a bloodthirsty warrior overnight. So, although she was prepared to face whatever lay ahead, she would not pretend that she was looking forward to it. In the end though, it seemed that her worries were unfounded, as they made it all the way to Kadjerak's fortress without encountering any further resistance. Yumi was surprised - especially after what Selene and Lavender had said about his rapidly improving necromancy. This was a guy who meant business and had the power to do some real damage - so if he wasn't exercising it now, that could only mean he was saving it for later. Yumi swallowed nervously at the thought. Yumi tried to concentrate as Lavender and Louis discussed their tactics, but her gaze kept being drawn by that innocent-looking drawbridge, laid out invitingly for their use. She couldn't help but feel that the moment they were all across, it would snap shut and that would be it, they would be trapped and at the mercy of the necromancer in his own territory. Not exactly the ideal set of circumstances for a battle. Also, Yumi did not like the way they would be so exposed as they crossed the bridge - if Kadjerak had any archers hidden away on the fortress wall, their team would be easy pickings. Which was why she was so very relieved to be given the option of stealth. Sure, making her way through waist-deep putrid water in a sewer was not exactly her idea of fun, but when weighed up against the seemingly suicidal option of barging through the front entrance which was so clearly a trap, Yumi did not even have to think twice about which option she would prefer. Although it was true that she had some impressive fire-power up her sleeve, after the mess she had made with the Erinyes Yumi did not want to endanger the group by making another mistake. Besides, this way she could provide some back-up to the Bravo group if they needed it. Speaking up, she announced that she too would be following Louis to retrieve the tome, then positioned herself with Chizu and Ryo. |

~Sugar-Coated Insanity of HYPERNESS~

Miyuki almost gagged at the smell of the dead Erinyes. She smiled at Damon when he patted her on the head. "Thanks." she told him, gathering the empty water bottles. Miyuki followed Lavender and Louis to Kadjerak's Fort. She looked around as the two started talking about tactics. It wasn't very pleasant being there. After a while, she looked towards the two at the head of the group. They were done talking and people were now picking sides. Storm or stealth? For Miyuki, the answer was easy. She wasn't very good at storming and fighting so she chose stealth. She walked over to Louis's group and stood next to Chizu. She looked behind her towards the sewer. She called up purified water and used to fill her water bottles. It was most likely that she would need the water. |

"I'll help with the attack." said Erin. He wasn't necessarily well suited for it, but he wasn't any better suited for stealth. The stealth team needed to have some precision and he wasn't going to be any use for that. He could probably so something from the front line though. At the very least he could manage to not get in the way. |

Sneak attack? Normally Damon would be alright with that. This time, however, he knew he'd not be able to do this as well as he normally could. He wasn't himself. He was very, VERY furious at the necromancer behind this entire mess. But at the same time.......Quite simply, he wasn't sure he qas suited for this sort of an assault. ...Bah. This wouldn't be any different than the one time in England. Except this time it wasn't a church full of biggoted superpowered psych killers, this time it was just a necromancer. One whom he was rather hoping was more undead than alive. "The DARKNESS is the best thing for stealth." He said, as he too moved into the group for the stealth infiltration. ~*~*~*~*~ Meglumar thought on this very hard. This was a very hard thing for him to choose between. On the one hand, he had a sword. Swords were handy in sneak attacks, if you used them right. On the other hand, there was a LOT of water in the moat. Enough for him to do some major damage. He looked between the two groups. This just was too hard. He finally spoke up. "I will stay here. I have a great deal of resources to work with here that I would not inside. To waste that would be...foolish." He said in a rather slow way. It seemed he was still not quite sure if this was right, but he had a fairly good feeling that this was the right thing. |
