This thread is open to any and all Arcadians from the Fire Division who have posted since last week in this thread. I'm not too particular about posting order for this one, but please bear in mind that once you have posted you should wait until the current 'round' is over before posting again.

With the team of Arcadians properly briefed on the details of the book recovery mission, what followed next was a simple matter of being taken up by the Arc Angel and beamed down to their mission location, to an area in Florencia known as the Havenstorm Forest.

The first sight that greeted Lavender's eyes upon being beamed down by the Arc Angel was a mist that seemed to fill the surrounding woods. This particular stretch of woods, deep within the Havenstorm Forest was unlike the rest of the woods; where the rest of the forest was known to be a lush paradise of greenery, the trees in here were stunted, their bark cracked and gray, branches gnarled and twisted and leaves drooping - it was as if the very land itself was tainted, rendering it inhospitable to life.

"This place, it smells of death and dark sorcery..." Selene commented as she looked around, having transformed into her lilac and white Arcadia field uniform. The air was still, with no breeze to rustle the leaves of the trees, and the stretch of forest was silent as a grave save for the occasional cawing noise made by ravens.

"Arcadians, report in," Lavender transformed into her field uniform as she sent a message to all Arcadia operatives in the vicinity via the Arcadian link; with visibility being as poor as it is, the first thing on the leader's mind was to do a headcount to ensure that upon beaming down all of them were present and accounted for.

Travelling by Arc Angel would take some getting used to, Yumi thought, as she stumbled and ungracefully latched on to a tree to stop herself from falling over. She hadn't expected to hit the ground quite so soon. Regardless, it seemed that she was here now... wherever 'here' was. She paused for a moment to untangle her Arcadian uniform skirt from where it had gotten caught in some underbrush. Freed, Yumi lifted her eyes and completed a full inspection of her surroundings. The underbrush gave way to towering trees all around her - apparently this mission was going to take place in a forest of some kind.

As she took a few hesitant steps and began exploring her immediate area, however, Yumi quickly realised that this was no ordinary forest. The gnarled trees, putrid smell and a distinct lack of light in the mist that surrounded her all combined to give off an aura of unpleasantness that matched the description Lavender had given them of their target. A deathly forest - it could not be more suited for a necromancer. It seemed she was definitely in the right place.

"Arcadians, report in," came the command from her captain at that moment. Although it was hard to tell from which direction the voice had come, it having been transmitted mentally through their Arcardian link and not shouted speech, Yumi made an educated guess. Within a few moments of crunching footsteps weaving through the dying trees and underbrush, she stepped out and saw Lavender was standing beside a tree, waiting for her and the rest of the troops.

"Yumi Isamu, reporting in ma'am," she said formally to the field commander, before laughing a little. "First again it seems!"

This place was rotten. Damon removed the hood of his cloak, by now knowing that despite his appearance, nobody in Arcadia would strike at him. He 'smelled' the air, and 'frowned.' This entire place was not killed naturally. "Unnatural magics....defiling the very essence of nature." He hissed out quietly. Perhaps it was his nature as an Elemental spirit, but seeing the land like this made him very angry.

Damon Ark. Reporting in. He responded tot he hail from his commanding officer. He already could not wait to meet this scumbag and get the book back. And maybe slice off his hands. Though that last part was PROBABLY the elemental in him, again.

~*~*~*~*~

Meglumar stood there, hands inside his coat and on his sword. The mist was...dead. He could normally channel water, though Mist was not of that sort. But even still, he could just feel the dead nature of this mist. And looking around, it was obvious the rest of this place was just as dead.

Ah, Lavender was calling out using the Arcadian link. Meglumar was still not used to utilizing it, finding it to be odd. Still, it was a nice way to keep in contact, he guessed. Meglumar here. This place feels dead. He 'said', stating the obvious.

Chizu had to admit, traveling by Arc Angel was kind of cool, although she could have done without the sudden disorienting teleportation to the ground. She frowned as she landed, looking around her. The air felt cold and clammy against her skin and she was suddenly glad for the fact that her Arcadia uniform covered almost everything except for her face. That did nothing to deaden her elemancer senses, though. The air felt dead, and no matter what she did, she couldn't shake that feeling

But fixing the world would have to wait. Right now, they were here to track down the bad guy. It frustrated Chizu to no end that they couldn't do anything about it yet. There were so many things that they couldn't fix just yet. Fixing them one at a time was the only way. She sighed and put aside the rest of her feelings for now, keeping only the ones that had to do with getting the book back from the freak of nature that now had it.

Arcadians, report in, said Lavender over the mental connection. Chizu looked around for her, cursing when she realized she couldn't see more than a few paces in front of her face. Lavender couldn't have been far away, and with enough stumbling around, she managed to find her.

Chizu here, she said, over the connection. We got a plan for this?

~ * ~ * ~

Star wasn't sure if she disliked the place because it was creepy, or if she disliked it because she was prejudiced against any place that didn't have a nice unbroken link to the sunshine that she could feel was right above this mist. She was pretty sure it was a mix of the two. Being without the sun always made her uneasy...and the place was pretty creepy too.

It was a little hard to find her way, but Star followed everyone else's voices to where the Arcadia members had assembled. She walked over to Meglumar and smiled, tapping him on the shoulder. "Made it," she said. Over the mental link, she spoke to Lavender. "Star Ricci. Present and accounted for."

Ryo looked around after being teleported. The area looked to be in bad shape. "Ryo Yansaki reporting in. This place looks pretty bad...This visibility makes it great to be ambushed,"Ryo said as he reported in. He touched the nearest tree.

What do you make of this guys?he asked the others in his mind.

This is definitely the work of black magic. These trees look as if they may have physically cried out in anguish when they were destroyed,Model S thought.

I know, isn't it great? Dark remarks aside, based on that picture, this man is serious about the dark arts. He is bound to be puling every trick he can with what is left of his body,Terion warned.

For the sake of continuing with the mission I will be autopiloting the thread at this point by skipping over the initial beaming down/reporting in phase and moving on to the next phase of the mission.

Cut Scene

The first phase of the mission was easy enough; upon being beamed down from the Arc Angel it was a simple matter of the Arcadian's reporting in and preparing for the next phase of the mission - despite the poor visibility the Arcadia operatives were able to easily locate one another and as soon as the entire team was gathered the next phase of the mission was to proceed North through the woods to make rendevous with the scouting party that had arrived ahead of the Fire division. Hopefully, during the time between the briefing at headquarters and now they might have managed to gather more useful information on the enemy - his base of operations, goals and agendas and where possible, any exploitable weaknesses.

Despite the mist and chill and overall dreary ambiance, the forest thus far contained no threats, and the team was able to make good progress through the accursed forest, maintaining visual contact with one another at all times. After about half an hour of navigating the forest the team would soon find themselves at a clearing. Amidst the shrubs and grasses, broken stumps of pillars and weather-worn statues dot the landscape, ancient ruins that have been mostly reclaimed by nature. What they are looking at right now are the remains of an ancient Wood Elf city, back in a era when the Wood Elves of Florencia still constructed cities of brick and stone instead of magically weaving their dwellings right out of the forest trees.

Lavender raised her right hand, signaling the team to halt as they entered what was once a plaza, the flagstones barely visible beneath the carpet of grass that had sprung up from all over the cracks between the pavings. A head peeked out from behind the cover of a ruined wall, followed by a hand that gave the Arcadia leader a thumbs-up sign before the man behind the wall stepped out of his cover and into plain view.

Judging from the man's modern military getup, it was clear that he was not from Florencia. Clad in a woodland camouflage BDU, the only part of the man's body that was visible were a pair of blue eyes that peeked out from beneath the peak of a camouflage army cap and a camo scarf that covered the lower half of his face. Seeing Lavender and her team present the man slung his weapon - a L96 sniper rifle - over his shoulder and saluted. "Pathfinder Louis Freebird, reporting for duty ma'am!"

"What have you to report, Agent Freebird?" Lavender asked.

"Not too far from our current location is a ruined fort," the scout replied, pointing westwards, down the remains of an ancient avenue. "That is apparently where the one you called 'Kadjerak' has made his base of operations. My observations of undead beings entering and leaving the ancient fortress complex confirms this."

It was around this time that the mist that had been hanging thickly all over the forest began to clear, visibility having more or less returned to normal, although the scout didn't seem too happy about it, unslinging his rifle to hold the weapon in his hands. "Shit..." the scout cursed, his finger resting just outside the trigger guard as he scanned the skies above. "We must move quickly, being visible does not work to our advantage, in fact-" Louis' words were interrupted by a deafening screech coming from above, and looking up, the Arcadians would find a quartet of what appeared to be haggard-looking women with ragged wings, akin to a mockery of angels. Snarling, the creatures glared at the Arcadians below with yellow catlike eyes, their jaws opening to proportions impossible for the human anatomy, baring a set of wickedly sharp teeth that gave their faces a more feline appearance than human.

"E...Erinyes?" Selene broadcast over the Arcadian link, at least that was what the Briton thought the creatures in the sky were, seeing that they matched the portrayals of Erinyes from Greek mythology, also known by Romans as Furies.

"Arcadians, airborne enemies at six o' clock!" Lavender shouted over the Arcadian link as with another screech, the Erinyes split into two pairs and performed a nose-dive towards the nearest Arcadians, clawed hands outstretched and ready to rend flesh!

Enemy Counter

Erinyes x 4

Enemy Information: Brought to unlife from the wrath of the unavenged dead, Erinyes can be considered to be the equivalent of a cross between an Air Soldier and Spellcaster Heartless. Erinyes typically prefer to swoop down on unsuspecting foes to rake at them with their razor-sharp nails, or fire basic elemental blasts (i.e. fire/ice/lightning) at them from a distance.

OoC: Didn't even notice this until now. Oh well, works out fine for me.

Erin stumbled as he heard the enemies had arrived. He say them and they seemed horrible. "Damn..." He muttered to himself. The disgustingly open jaw worried him slightly. He stumbled forward

He dived behind a tree, just in case one of the monsters came at him, and summoned a cloud beside him. He dropped it down in temperature to the point where it was unlikely to actually precipitate. He didn't need to worry about it doing that but that temperature was freezing. He flicked his wrist and the cloud sloshed toward one of the diving Erinyes. The cold was bound to do something to it, wasn't it?

The moment they entered the ruined village, Chizu felt the air elemental at her back stiffen. She frowned. The feeling of utter discontent from Aether was something that she wasn't used to. Aether had been alive long enough that he was relatively calm, and it was very seldom that she felt any sort of emotion coming from him.

What's up? she asked him as they came to a halt. She folded her arms and watched as a scout came out from behind a building and talked to Lavender, her attention divided between the wind elemental and the report she knew she had to focus on. In response, Aether released some of his barriers, and Chizu caught a glimpse of what his attuned senses were seeing.

In this place once was a natural beauty terrible enough to wound, crafted over generations by a people close to nature itself and once abandoned left to let nature reclaim its own. But over it, like a wet cloth thrown down over a flame, hung the taint that spread over the air and through the unnatural fog. That brief moment of enhanced vision stabbed at her heartstrings, before Aether put up his barriers again to spare her the grief.

We'll catch the bastard, she silently promised the wind spirit.

I'm aware, said Aether in reply as Chizu turned her full attention towards Lavender. Kadjerak was in a fort not too far from here. Good. They could close him in and crush him. Her eyes narrowed dangerously and she immediately looked skyward at the sudden screech. Lavender announced airborne enemies, and Chizu quickly took off in a run in that direction, using the wind to push herself through the air towards the Erinyes.

She was more or less equipped to deal with airborne enemies. After all, she controlled the air, didn't she? Gusts of wind moved on either side of her to rush at the nearest enemy, their ends sharpened into blades as Chizu attempted to cut them to ribbons where they flew.

This feeling of hate was overwhelming. The people who had lived here, long ago, the way they had lived here was perfect. He could FEEL the love the land had fort hose days. But now, it had pain. Agony and pain. Desolation and death.

He was already on edge when these monstrosities attacked. He needed to unleash a bit of his pent up hatred anyways. He turned to face them, grabbing onto a large rock nearby, one that was probably used as the base of some sort of pedestal or something ages ago. "Drop dead." He said flatly as he hurled it at one of the Erinyes.

~*~*~*~

Meglumar glanced at the remains of the city. He wasn't sure how he felt about ghosts, having never seen one, but this city seemed almost haunted. The remains of it all, it looked as if it would be the perfect spot for some wraith or something to jump out and screech at them

When he heard the mental command dictating the approach of the Erinyes, he turned, reaching into his coat to pull out one bottle of water. He unscrewed the lid, and placed it upside down onto his left hand, aiming his right hand at an Erinyes that was close to him. He fired off a quick, strong blast of water at it, emptying the bottle completely in the process.

Yumi was caught completely off-guard by the arrival of these air-borne foes. She had come on this mission expecting to fight off one evil necromancer - it had never occurred to her that there would be other enemies along the way. Looking back now it seemed unbelievably naive of her - but then again, she was hardly a battle-hardened warrior. This would be the first time she voluntarily walked into a combat situation, after all. Her previous experience with the Yakuza in Niwa had been forced upon her, and for most of that time she had been bound and helpless. This was different. This was a chance for her to actively participate in a battle. A chance for Yumi, detective-in-training, to show her quality.

And then there was no more time for reflection, as the Erinyes (or so Selene had called the vile creatures) were upon them. For a moment more, Yumi remained frozen, locked in a paralysing fear. Fear of the unknown. Everything was unknown to her. What did this attack mean? How was she supposed to respond to it? How could she defend herself? Would she survive? Fear was selfish. The survival instinct too, so rarely called upon by Yumi, was inherently selfish. Both contradicted the girl's natural impulses to care for others. But emotions and morals mattered little in a battle, particularly one against monsters. If selfish means would achieve a victorious result, then nobody would even stop to question her methods. Or so she had to believe.

As these thoughts flew through her mind, her eyes followed the movements of her fellow Arcadians. Unlike her, they seemed to have experienced no trouble with finding the courage to attack an enemy. Without hesitation, they had fired off their initial attacks, hoping to annihilate, yet also probing to determine their foe's strength. It was a clever method, and Yumi admired their strength of character. How was it possible that she alone was so weak? She felt a hot flush of shame burn through her rigid body, the heat of the emotion melting her frozen limbs. Finally, she could act. She had to redeem herself - if not in the eyes of her team mates (who quite possibly had not even noticed her dilemma), then in her own self respect.

Mind and body suddenly springing into coordinated action, Yumi glanced frantically around for an appropriate weapon. Large rocks, such as the ones she had used when training with Jameson, were in short supply. There were, however, fallen tree branches a-plenty. Choosing a sizeable yet still manageable piece of timber, she heaved up her makeshift weapon and lobbed it in the direction of the nearest Erinyes with all her might. Briefly closing her eyes, she quickly opened them again to see the world in a web of atoms. Pointing her finger directly at the tree branch currently sailing through the air, Yumi merely pictured its molecular bonds breaking apart - and suddenly the air around it was filled with smoke and flying splinters of wood as the branch exploded, the force making the leaves on a nearby tree flutter wildly.

She would have to wait for the smoke to clear to determine whether or not her attack had been successful, or made any impact at all. In the meantime, she merely sighed in resignation as the familiar bruises immediately began surfacing on her arms.

Thanks Erin, your method for controlling combat is pretty nifty indeed. :D

Enemies are numbered so that everyone will know who or what to target

So this is Arcadia in action... Lavender thought as her subordinates launched themselves into action. It appears that most of them already knew the basics of combat tactics, and that pleased the purple-haired Esper greatly.

Kaloo

Erin's practiced reflexes saved him from being mauled as the boy conjured up a cloud, lowering the already chilly atmosphere around himself just as as Erinyes #1 dived right into the cloud, not knowing what to expect. While it took more than just chilling cold to stop an undead creature that is incapable of sensations of the flesh, the reduced visibility created by the elemancer's cloud did do a good job of confusing the undead hag, who missed his head entirely, and in a rather comical fashion smashed face-first into a pillar, emitting a shrill cry.

Normally, an impact like that would've knocked someone unconscious, but one would need to bear in mind that undead are immune to stun effects. Hissing and spitting like an angry feline, the Erinyes rose to her feet, a black ichor oozing out of a gash in her right temple that ran all the way down to the cheek. Flapping her wings in rage and with an angry panther-like snarl, Erinyes #1 raised her hands above her head as a blizzard of snow and ice began to gather in the palms, before leveling her hands in front of her and putting them together to launch a lance-like projectile of ice in Erin's general direction!

Caith

Erinyes #2 had her sights set on one of the Arcadians who didn't appear to be ready for combat, Yumi. The vile creature's predatory instincts drinking in on the girl's fear. She sensed a vulnerability, a chink in the armor, so to speak and swooped towards the source like a tiger pouncing on a lamb. However, said Erinyes would never find her target as Chizu threw herself forward to intercept the fiend in mid-flight. The Erinyes shrieked as Chizu's blades of wind clipped her wings, sending the fiend spiraling out of control in mid-flight and crashing onto the ground below.

Rising to her feet, the Erinyes stared Chizu in the eye, snarling angrily as she spread her arms out, arcs of electricity crackling around her claws. But for now the creature appeared to be putting up a show of defiance rather than actually attacking, still enraged over being denied a shot at an easy target. Although it nonetheless still presented an opportunity for Chizu and her teammates to get a free shot in on the fiend while she is still steaming with rage.

Captain

Erinyes #3 hissed in alarm as Damon hurled what appeared to be the remnants of a stone pedestal at her; the undead hag narrowly avoiding the half-ton of sculpted marble as she raised altitude to avoid the projectile, letting it smash into the ground below. However, in avoiding one projectile attack the Erinyes was left open to another attack, and Meglumar's water blast nailed the undead hag in the side of her head, sending the Erinyes wobbling in mid-flight.

Lavender followed-up on Meglumar's assault, snaring Erinyes #3 with an Aero Whip and sending the undead hag flying towards her. In a practiced motion, Lavender spun about in midair, the winds circling around her right leg as the purple-haired Esper delivered a vicious wind-assisted roundhouse kick to the Erinyes' head, sending the fiend flying several yards through the air before crashing onto the ground and landing on her back.

Beka

Thanks to Chizu's intervention, Yumi only had one Erinyes to deal with, although is even one of them something a girl who, despite her special powers, hadn't had much in the way of combat experience deal with? Erinyes #4 snarled as she swooped in on what she sensed to be a feeling of helplessness, a flicker of malevolent glee in her yellow feline eyes. The undead hag's eyes momentarily widened as Yumi picked up a tree branch and chucked the piece of timber at the hag's face.

A wicked sneer crossed the Erinyes' face - did she really think a meager projectile like that could save her? And this was when Yumi pointed her finger and the branch exploded in midair, sending forth a hail of wood splinters and a cloud of smoke. Erinyes #4 shrieked as the sudden explosion obscured her view and caused her to sail right over the brown-haired girl's head and crash into the nearby bushes. Hissing, the Erinyes rose to her feet, ripping apart the blanket of vegetation as it trudged towards Yumi on feet, clawed hands outstretched in eagerness to exact vengeance.

"They've brought their friends along!" Agent Freebird hollered over the din of battle as he fired at a pair of airborne Erinyes that are approaching from the East, his shots missing their mark entirely. Snarling, Erinyes #5 swooped in towards Damon with her claws outstretched, while Erinyes #6 continued to circle overhead.

OOC

And a summary on the current situation...

Enemies: Erinyes
#1 - Attacking Erin with an ice spell.
#2 - Confronting Chizu; is open to attacks of opportunity.
#3 - Down, but is it out? Confirmation might be needed.
#4 - Readying a claws attack on Yumi.
#5 - Attempting a diving attack at Damon.
#6 - Idle/on standby

My characters (Lavender, Selene) and NPC (Louis) will provide support to the others as needed, i.e. if a character specifically calls for assistance.

An Erinyes heading straight for him, claws outstretched? Damon threw back his arms, his gloves flying off, his claws stretched out and ready for conflict. As soon as the fifth Erinyes was close enough he tried to grab the claws of the Erinyes. "Hello." He said, a wicked grin forming on his face.

He then began to spin in place, hopefully spinning the Erinyes as well. "Goodbye." He said, before releasing his grip, and pulling back his arms. HOPEFULLY he wasn't dizzy and wrong, and he was hurling Erinyes straight into a big tree.

~*~*~*~*~

Meglumar gave a nod of appreciation to Lavender, before running to the third Erinyes and unsheathing his sword, placing it by it's neck. "Call off your attacking allies! NOW!" He yelled to the Erinyes below him, having no idea if it was sentient or not. Either way, he at least needed to give these things a chance to surrender. Killing a foe in cold blood wasn't his way.

The moment the Erinyes attacked, Star had hung back, steadily gathering sunlight and focusing it into her hands. Now, as the rest of Arcadia went into action and one of them confronted Chizu with lightning, Star smiled and extended her hands.

"Darling, you call that a light show?" she asked, seemingly completely unfazed by the present danger as she smiled and extended her hands towards the Erinyes. Orbs of light began firing from them in rapid succession, heading towards the creature. Star stopped at six small orbs, smiling and grinning at Chizu.

I've got this, she said over the connection.

~ * ~ * ~

Chizu landed on the ground with her back turned towards the falling Erinyes and quickly turned around to see what her attack had done. The Erinyes had its wings clipped but was still getting up, turning towards her. Chizu glared at it, holding her ground as it began to form lighting around its hands. The wind continued to move around her, whipping her hair back and forth and preparing herself for the attack.

If it thought she would be scared off by lightning, it was wrong. Before anything could happen though, orbs of light immediately came towards it. Chizu looked up to see one of the other Arcadia members standing there, smiling and waving at her. "Thanks," she said quickly over the connection, jumping into the air towards Erinyes 6. She concentrated the wind around her fists as she attempted to do to it what she had done to the first one.

"Considering my energy is limited, I think I'll save it,"Ryo muttered. He crossed his arms and concentrated. The air around him crackled. Sparks flew off his skin and then the air around him became ionized. His body now contained a large electrical charge. If anything touched him, he could simply lash out at it and fry it.

Miyuki felt uneasy. The fog around her felt unnatural and she couldn't help but unscrew the tops of the bottles that lined her waist. It turned out that that was a smart move. At that moment, four Erinyes came out. She emptied the bottles of water and by the time she was finished, two more Erinyes came out.

Miyuki gathered her water and attacked at the closest Erinyes she could see. Her water flew forward and its speed created a sharp tip. When that was done, Miyuki called the water back quickly and used the same attack two more times.
