Star sat at the table, a smile on her face as she looked at the plate of hot food that had been served to her. For the price of one gold earring that she had to force Meglumar to take, she was clean, dressed in clothes and shoes that weren't torn from the road, and was now about to eat off an actual plate for the first time in three days. Life was good.

They were sitting in the common room of an inn in a small village that they had come across after entering the Dynor Countryside. The phrase "one horse town" would probably be appropriate here. She had only seen one horse in this whole village, and that poor animal had been delegated to pulling a cart of vegetables to market. She was dressed in a rough brown dress and shoes that were definitely more comfortable than the stuff she had been wearing when she arrived. She didn't even want to think about the blisters she ended up having after walking for three days straight. It didn't seem to bother Meglumar though, so she hadn't complained too much.

She took a bite of food from her plate and thought about their situation. After speaking to some people, they had learned that this world was called Florencia, and the creatures they had stumbled across were called Heartless. They weren't the first people from other worlds that had shown up. There were ways to get to other worlds that had been attacked by the Heartless, but Kara wasn't one of them. How did she know that? Because if Kara had been one of them, they would have been one of the first to know. Things were still peaceful when they left. There was no sign of Helios or anyone with Helios's description.

Even with Star's perpetual optimism, the situation looked pretty grim. The only way they were ever going to get home was if Kara got attacked by the Heartless, or if they stayed alive and managed to find a way home when all this was over. Still, there were plus sides. At least they were alive and had their powers intact.

"You're food's going to get cold if you don't eat," said Star, smiling at Meglumar. She watched the people that passed by, looking for anything that seemed out of place for this world.

Meglumar was deep in thought over this whole situation, as he looked down into his food. He too was garbed in brown rural clothing. It was very comfortable. Better than the clothes he had arrived in, considering the terrain. It was actually more comfortable than he wagered the clothing he had from his world was.

He had felt guilty over Star selling that one heirloom of hers, and was trying to mull over a way to buy it back. There had to be some way to do so. He just wasn't sure what it would be yet. Star then shook him out of his stupor. "Oh, right. My apologies." he said, taking a bite. Ah, this was much better than deer meat, that was for sure.

He noticed Star looking around. Looking at the people. He began to wonder if she was alright. She was a native of Kara, and people there likely were not used to talking for days on end. They had those automobiles and gates to handle that. "How are your shoes? Better than the old ones?" He asked, recalling how her shoes were a source of complaint on the trip.

......

*staaaaaaaaaaare*

Ein was staring at the the two brown garbed people sitting just a little bit across from him. Despite the fact that he had blindfolds on, it was fairly easy to tell that he was observing them. Their colors both stated that they didn't have bad intentions, however one of their auras was filled with worry, and the other...Well. Cheerful. Very cheerful. Sort of a mismatched couple, but Ein found it oddly amusing. The cheerful girl seemed to looking around for...Something while the worrying boy was...Filled with worry. And thinking. About something.

"I'm sensing SOMETHING here....Similar to that lady Vielle. These two are...." Ein's thoughts trailed off as he continued to stare at them, trying to pinpoint exactly the abnormal things he was sensing from them.

"Much better, thank you," said Star with a smile, wiggling her toes around inside her new shoes. Granted, they weren't the most fashionable shoes ever and they had pretty much been found in this world's equivalent of the bargain bin, but they were way more practical than those high-heeled monstrosities that she had been wearing when she fell through the Gate, and they were actually suited to walking for days on end.

She took a bite of food and chewed it thoughtfully, her elbow resting on the table and her fingers tracing the side of her face lightly and absentmindedly as she watched the crowd. Her fingers caught a stray strand of gold hair and twirled it absently. Most of the people here seemed to be natives, so she was out of luck. There was that one interesting guy at the other table though, the one with the blindfold. If it wasn't for the fact that he obviously couldn't see, Star might say that he was looking right at them.

She shook her head and went back to her meal, eating it slowly. If Ein was observing her aura closely enough, he would notice that the cheerfulness only went so far. On the inside, things got a little more tangled as worry, guilt, and the stress of being in another world began to intertwine. Of course, Star would never acknowledge the knot's existence. She swallowed and turned towards Meglumar.

"Okay, so this is what we know," she said, raising one finger. "One, this world's called Florencia. Two--," Another finger. "--we're in a region called the Dynor Countryside. Three, we're not the first otherworlders to pass through here. And four, those strange shadowy things we saw in the forest were called Heartless. Did I leave anything out?"

"No. You have not." Meglumar said, before taking a sip from his cup of water. Then suddenly something came to his mind. "Wait. No. You did leave something out. Or rather, I did" He said, remembering something else. "I forgot, while you were changing to your dress, I asked about the other-worlders. There's something like a Gateport, about a weeks distance away."

"I can't recall where they said it lead to, but it's not this world. It's someplace else, someplace else that is also dealing with these foul heartless creatures." He said, with a small groan. It was some good news that they had at least. They were not alone. This world wasn't cut off from other worlds. They could maybe get to other worlds.

"It's something we might be able to look into. If the accident got us here, maybe another accident can get us back." He said, with a light inflection in his voice. It was a long shot. But it was still a shot. After all, this world was a lot like her earth. Who's to say magic gates could not be here as well.

"We're making progress, at least. Before you know it, you'll be back in the dorms." He said, taking a fork to his food. He was hoping with all his being, praying to Zeras, even praying slightly to Star's god, that they would get back. Star was in this mess because she tried to help him. He would make sure she got back to her home. In once piece. No matter the cost.

Ein continued to observe the two, however he flinched when he heard the girl mention the Heartless. He also noticed a very slight change to her aura. Okay. This was getting disturbing. Heartless where the beings that overran worlds, and them being in Florencia meant that....Ein stood up quickly and walked over. "Ummm...Excuse me, sorry for eavesdropping, but I was listening to what you said before and something interested me..." Ein said casually as he approached the two.

"You two...You're from another world as well right? You said you saw the Heartless on this world?" Ein spoke in a quiet voice so that only Meglumar and Star could hear him.

Star took a sip out of her cup of water and made a face. "More walking," she said with a small smile, her tone more amused than anything. "Let's just hope this one works the way it should," she said with a small laugh at the end. It was just like Star to make light of a potentially real threat. She took a bite out of her meal. If they were going to be on the road again, then she was going to enjoy a hot meal that Meglumar didn't have to chase through the woods.

"Of course we will," she said with a giggle when Meglumar said they'd be back in the dorms soon. "Never doubted it for a second." Meglumar seemed to be feeling worse about this than she was, despite the fact that each time they camped he seemed like a kid at Christmas. She had to admit that the stars were beautiful, even though they weren't her stars. She had no complaints there.

Star looked up and grinned as the blindfolded boy walked over to them. She was right. He had been staring...well...figuratively speaking anyway. She looked him over. Brown hair, slender, on the short side, but overall not bad.

"Yep!" said Star, cheerfully. "We're both from another world, and we saw a few of those Heartless things over in...what was that forest's name again? Havenstorm?" As she talked, she scanned the room for an extra seat. She gestured towards one at the next table. "Why don't you sit and we can talk about it?" she asked. "I'm Star, and that's Meglumar."

Someone approached them. Someone who looked to be...blind? How strange. He claimed to have been eavesdropping, but was apologetic for it. He said something that interested him. They were from another world... As well? Then this person was displaced as well, most likely.

Star beckoned him to take a seat, with which Meglumar nodded in agreement. She introduced them, and Meglumar glanced at this strange person. His ears....they were a lot like his. "We come from a world called 'Earth.' The capital of Altatur, Karazhan. Who might you be? And from what world are you from?" He asked, curious.

This person knew the heartless. He could not be from their world, unless the heartless attacked it as they left. That might have been possible, but he hoped it was not the case. Besides that, this person seemed more like someone to come from his world. Probably not exactly his world, though. Someplace like it, more likely

Ein nodded as he sat down. "My name is Ecthel Kierin, but for convenience's sake, just call me Ein. I'm not from a different world, this is my world, but I've met a few people from other ones. You two would make the 3rd and 4th ones so far." Ein said, still speaking fairly quietly. A waiter approached him however he waved her off. Speaking of other worlds could be a bit of a sensitive matter at times after all. He noticeably paled when Star mentioned that they had spotted Heartless in Havenstorm forest.

"If what you've said is true, and there are Heartless here, then this isn't just a matter concerning getting two travelers home anymore..." Ein had a perplexed look on his face from this.

"Listen to me carefully, the Heartless alone are weak, but if the Heartless multiply, they are known for overrunning worlds. You two being here along with the Heartless means another rift has been opened, and it's starting to link more worlds together." Ein fell silent, not really knowing what else to say. His information was limited on the matter, but what he knew already made the sighting of Heartless a cause for alarm.

"To a degree, I can also open up rifts, but I doubt that I could open one big enough to send both of you anywhere, let alone your own world..." Ein placed his bag on the table. "Actually, anyone can open a rift, it's not magic. It's just a trick. But regardless, it's a very difficult trick. You'd have to find a professional...Magician I guess since they like to think of themselves as that."

The third and the fourth? Ein's words only corroborated the words of the guard they had spoken to earlier. More people from other worlds were showing up in Florencia, even in regions that seemed as remote as this, which meant that there was a threat serious enough to displace whatever was between worlds. Like Meglumar, she relaxed a bit knowing the Heartless hadn't struck Kara.

...But how long would that last?

Her eyes widened slightly when Ein said that the Heartless could travel through the rifts between the worlds, a single note of alarm piercing through the cheerfulness. Star's mind moved at light speed, taking random events and occurences and piecing them together to form a chain. If Heartless could move through the rifts between worlds and she had accidentally opened a path between Havenstorm forest and Kara and there were Heartless in Havenstorm Forest then it wasn't too hard to imagine that Heartless could have crossed into Kara.

She immediately grabbed that train of thought and forcibly derailed it before it could worry her too much. If there were Heartless in Kara, the people in the city would deal with it. Besides, she was pretty sure she had fried the Gate good. Even if they did go through, the exit was blocked.

In the meantime, they had other things to worry about. Like, oh...I don't know. Getting home. That was pretty important. Maybe not so important in the grand scheme of things, but it was pretty important to her.

"So is that why there are a lot of people from other worlds here?" asked Star, taking another bite of food and cleaning her plate. "Because their worlds have been overrun by Heartless?"

Traveled..through...rifts?!

Meglumar's face paled instantly. No. That...that was bad. Kara was practically a dimensional, space time, hub! He wasn't the only off worlder. There were quite a few, according to their government. Even if it was just 10 people, that was 10 worlds that could be destroyed if Kara was found. or worse...10 worlds that could lead the heartless to Kara. It was nothing short of a space time bomb waiting to happen.

This 'Ein' person mentioned getting a wizard, with which Meglumar replied with a 'Harumph.' He really really REALLY hated wizards and magicians who messed with space time. Not surprising, as the last time he met one he ended up stranded in Kara in the first place.

Star extrapolated that people were, for the most part, here because their worlds were lost to those 'Heartless.' He sat back and waited for Ein to say more.

"I see your companion is familiar with rifts." Ein said with a raised eyebrow to Meglumar's response towards his magician comment. "Regardless of your past qualms, it's tricky to find people who can open rifts. You don't have to be a magician to open one, that's the name those less enlightened charlatans call themselves." Ein huffed up at the last part.

"Anyways, people start appearing in different worlds not just because their worlds have been overrun by Heartless. A rift teleportation gone wrong, a device to warp, so many things that can be named to send people. No. The Heartless however, can also link worlds together, so you see, it's not necessarily that their worlds have been overrun. Gods no, however it is a possibility. In your case however, I don't think that's the issue." Ein pieced together what he had heard so far in his head. Their world seemed to have a rift without the Heartless's aid, and since they hadn't seen the Heartless until not long ago, it meant that their world most definitely hasn't been overrun.

"What I'M more worried about however, is that you saw Heartless within my home forests. I am part Wood Elf after all. However, your issues with rifts...Well, actually, it's not that hard to solve. Anyone including you two can open up rifts. Want me to show you?" Ein asked.

Star resisted the urge to do one of the completely off the wall and distracting things she did when her teachers started rehashing old facts, especially since she had been in the wrong there. Of course people could end up in other worlds for reasons other than Heartless. Meglumar (and recently, herself) were victims of that sort of thing. '

But wouldn't the fact that the Heartless were around make such things more common? That was what people had told her, after all, that this sort of thing was more common. She was thinking more along the lines of the fact that she might have inadvertedly brought Heartless to Kara...and the 10 or so other worlds that might have been linked with it.

"Sure, I'd love to learn," she said, picking up her cup and finishing the last of her water. She quelled down the sudden flash of impatience the same way someone could squash an annoying insect. Panic was not going to make things better for them, after all.

Hrm. The concept of finding a way between worlds was very promising. They wouldn't need to worry as much when it came to traveling to this portal. It certainly would be a handy thing to have, and who knows? It might somehow end up with them getting home, if the rift technique were such a useful skill.

Star, naturally, expressed interest. He mulled it over in his head, before agreeing. "Such a skill would be incredibly useful. Thank you for the offer." He said, finishing off the food on his plate after he'd said that. This was going to be an important thing for them, if they learned how it worked.

Ein grinned like a child. He liked to teach people. "Well, rifts aren't too hard to create. I'll show you one." Ein said. He placed his bag on the table and opened it up. There was absolutely nothing inside, there there was two pockets. "There's nothing inside right? You're right. The bag is completely empty." Ein then reached into the pockets, him arm going far deeper into the bag up to almost his shoulder. This shouldn't have been possible due to the fact that his shoulder bag was fairly small. After sifting through some items, Ein's expression brightened slightly as he pulled out from his bag....A fairly large Pineapple. This couldn't have fit inside any hidden pockets or compartments in the bag that he just showed them.

"I must admit, I wasn't expecting that fruit vendor to stock up on these...But at least it works well as an example." Ein placed the pineapple in front of Star. "See? Simple. It's a trick. Just gotta move somethings here and there, and viola, you've moved the seams of space apart into another location." Ein placed his bag in front of Meglumar this time. "Now you try it, but don't force things. I only have one of those bags and recreating a small constant rift to a particular location can be tedious. If you get stuck, just ask." Ein said. Of course, the bag without manipulating space was just a bag. If Meglumar didn't succeed, he could actually tear a hole, not into space, but into his bag, and Ein didn't want that.
