Star adjusted her grip on the branch, letting out a small cry as she felt her hands slipping. She quickly held on tighter, stopping what would have been a very messy fall. She had fallen from a height just a little higher than this before. It had been a very unpleasant ride to the hospital. She heard the branch fall to the ground and heard a splat as the creature was no doubt crushed by it. Star let out a hissing breath she didn't even realize she had been holding as she reached up with another hand and pulled herself onto the branch. "Never better!" she called to Meglumar, standing up and straightening. She was visibly pale and her arms and legs were trembling, but her eyes were bright and she was still smiling. She moved down another few branches and jumped the remaining foot or so to solid ground. Star let out a sigh of relief and ran a hand through her sweat-soaked hair, glancing once at the creature pinned beneath the branch. As she watched, it disappeared into black smoke. "Well, that's something you don't see everyday," she said. |

With a sigh of relief, Meglumar sheathed his sword. It was a good thing Star was alright. There was one thing he was sure of: He did NOT want to be in a world like this if one of them got injured badly. They lacked the 'hospitals' and 'healers' his world did, so if they broke a bone, or anything like that, they would be in serious trouble. "I m glad to hear this." He said, also descending from the tree, and observing the strange creature vanish into nothingness. "A shame....I was hoping to have some meat to go with the fruits." He said, shrugging it off. He then began to work on making the leaves into suitable bedding He stood up after finishing. "I think I'm done here." He said, stretching himself out as he stood back up. "I think we'd best eat the dinner we have, then get some rest. Maybe one of us should stay on watch, in case another of those hostiles attack again. We can switch later as the night goes on." He suggested. |

"Well, I guess we'll just have to deal with fruits today," said Star, unwrapping the fruits from her jacket and holding them up to the firelight to inspect them. They were a little bruised, but not too badly. And since she doubted this world had technology or pesticides, they were probably perfectly safe to eat. She handed half of them to Meglumar and sat down by the fire, biting into one. It was sweeter than she thought it would be and it certainly wasn't the pizza she promised she was going to get after they slipped into the Gate, but it was food. She didn't say what both of them already knew, that they would be in trouble if they didn't find human civilization soon. Assuming humans even existed on this world. She looked up at Meglumar's suggestion. "I'll stay first," she said, with a small grin. "If anything happens, you'll hear me screaming at you." |

Meglumar took his fruit, and took a bite from it. Oh, this was delicious. He HAD to take these things' seeds. When they got back to his house, he'd be sure to add this to his garden. It was his common reaction to trying anything that tasted good. Granted, it would take years for the tree to grow, but the town was full of the floramancers, so it'd not take the years that would be normal. He then snapped out of his normal mindset. They were not back in Kara. It would take much more time for them to get back. If they ever did. He shook his head, such thoughts were not for this moment. He took another bite and removed some of the seeds. He would take them. They would get home. He would plant them. And they'd have more of the fruit to share. Star volunteered to stay up first, a bit surprising. She said that if she would wake him if anything should come. He nodded to her in response. "Very well." He said, finishing off his fruit, and moving over to the bedding. "If that is what you wish. Whenever you wish to change, just wake me." |

"Of course," said Star with a smile as she tossed the core of her fruit away. Meglumar might not notice the way her eyes drifted away under the firelight, looking towards the woods as if she was thinking about something, or the way her arms went up to hug her knees closer to herself. She looked up at the stars and slowly counted backwards from 300. Once she reached one, she glanced over at Meglumar's area of the camp. A small smile touched her lips. He'd be asleep by now. Good. Slowly, she reached into her pocket, pulling out an old red string of beads that once smelled of roses and a dog-eared, creased prayer book. Star opened the book to the first page, her fingers drifting reverently over the inscription made in her mother's handwriting, then flipped to a page, held it up to the firelight to read, and fingered the cross at the end of the string of beads. Star sighed, glanced at Meglumar again, and crossed herself. "I believe in God, the Father Almighty..." she slowly recited. ~ * ~ * ~ Star awoke the moment the first rays of sunlight cleared the horizon and brushed over her skin. She sat up, brushed away stray leaves and stretched, shaking off any last minute sleepiness. The ground had been uncomfortable and it wasn't the best night's sleep she had ever gotten, but it would have to do. "Morning," she said to Meglumar. She glanced at the dawn for a second and blinked, before pointing towards it. "East. West. North. South. Pick a direction, love." |

It had been a long night. He had enough sleep to function, but he was a bit tired. He wagered Star was very much the same way. Not too surprising, really, this was probably harder on the girl from the 'modern' world. Still, the second the sun hit her face, she was up and about, like this was one long camping trip. She was able to figure out the directions of the world by using it's sun, and asked him to pick which way they would go. He thought for a moment, looking in the various directions. "I suggest north. The forest extends in that direction. We can possibly hunt game, and get good food from them. And where there is game, there are hunters." He said, trying to think like a person who lived in the area. |

"Alright, north it is!" said Star with a grin as she pointed the way. She ran her fingers through her hair and tried to get it back into some sort of order, tying it in a ponytail at the base of her neck with her hairband as she walked through the forest towards the north. Here, Star paused for a moment to look around. There had been a forest near the vineyard, and while Star had only been playing near the outskirts of that forest, she knew how easy it was to get lost in the trees. She glanced at a tree ahead of her that was facing north, keeping her eyes on it as she tried to get over to that tree. "Well, I can tell you one thing," she told Meglumar, with a smile. "I'm pretty sure this world has humans in it." |

Meglumar looked to Star, curious how she was so sure of humans being in this world. "What makes you so sure? Do you see settlements? smoke?" He asked, looking at the sky above. No smoke. He then looked to the distance. No settlements either. How strange, he could find no sign of any humans being here, at the moment. Her elemental friend was sadly gone, so she could not be told by him. There were no signs in any strange language, either. He was confused now. He kept on, looking at Star as he did so. What did she see that he had not? |

Star shook her head, still smiling. "Nope, and nope," she said with a grin. "But unless I'm mistaken..." Star pointed off somewhere in the forest, a smile still on her face. Just past a few trees to their right, a narrow road cut through the underbrush, slowly winding north. Star smiled and turned back towards Meglumar. "That is a trail," she said. Humans and other human-like species were the only creatures she knew of that would cut through the forest to make it easier for them to move. She grinned at Meglumar, then picked her way through the forest towards the trail. "Well, let's go?" she asked with her sweetest smile. |

"..." Meglumar was tempted to preform what Star's world called the face palm. Okay. He was slightly dense. He should have seen that. Oh well, no use crying over spilled juice, as they saying went. He kept on, following Star. "Very well then." He said, still slightly embarrassed by his idiocy. "Let's find some civilization."
