-Getting Started

Before you begin at Hyakuji you have to decide to respect the rules. Consider this your prime directive!

I. Read The Rules

Rules exist for a reason. If you ever have questions, do not hesitate to get in touch with the Staff for clarification.

II. Read The Announcements And News

The staff assumes people stay current on the news and announcement forum. While we will not expect you to memorize old old news forum posts, the more recent ones we will expect you to be aware of.

III. Treat The Staff With Respect

Staffing is not an easy job; we are all human. You are expected to yield to the word of the staff and if you have a real dispute with one, deal with it in a civil manner. Also please give them time to respond to topics. It's prefered that if you have problems with someone in the staff, you bring it up to them privately through a PM or IM or something like that. We're all nice, don't be scared <3

Failure to hold to this rule will result in punishment and eventually removal from the site. You should be here at this site to roleplay and have a good time predominantly so in an ideal situation this being an issue shouldn't even exist.

Be reasonable, be respectful, think before you act. Also keep in mind we put a lot of work into Hyakuji. Copycat forums will not be tolerated either.

IV. Treat Other Members With Respect

It is the job of the staff to make sure the rules are followed. Everyone starts at some point, so be considerate of new members. If you see something that is rule breaking and its minor, please politely tell someone if you are already involved in a topic. If it is major or you are not in a topic, inform the staff.

Also if there are topics where you have a different view of something, do not automatically believe someone is dumb and therefore a communist nazi. Keep it civil~

Like the last rule, failure to adhere to this rule will result in punishment and eventually a banning. You're on this forum to roleplay and have fun not have a knock out, drag down argument with people. You are not forced to like everyone nor are you even forced to get along well with others but the forum itself will remain civil and well moving.

Likewise, this rule includes matters such as sexual harassment or plagiarism; neither of which will be tolerated.

V. Advertising

Pretty simple: Hyakuji is always looking to affiliate with other forums. The site will be happy to throw up a mini-banner with the rest at the bottom in exchange for a similar treatment at your Forum. Use the code below and PM Hiro_Tsukasa to discuss affiliation and give the proper links.

src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v710/penpen09/HyakujiMiniBanner.gif"></a>

Though Hyakuji openly accept any affiliation with other RPG forums (and love doing so), the site will not tolerate underhanded methods of advertisement such as spamming forums/chatbox, smear campaigns against Hyakuji or shady tactics like trying to siphon members elsewhere.

The Staff works hard to offer the best experience they can at Hyakuji and the site loves to promote other great roleplaying sites standing side by side. Get in touch and affiliate, it's not hard~

VI. All Zetaboards' Rules Apply

This means that any rules that apply to Zetaboards apply to you. No posting suggestive pictures. IC wise, thing's are allowed to be suggested. Lead right up to the 'event' and then have the screen fade out. Insert the fireworks. You know how the cheesy movies work, do that.

If you really have to act out every moment, take the skipped time to PM's or IM's. The site is all about supporting proper storytelling and if that's where your personal character's story goes then that's where it goes, but just keep the actual content off the board.

VII. Other Things

  • Signatures:
Please keep your signatures small. If your image is too large, you'll be contacted about it. Also, every member is urged to have a link to their profile(s) in their signature. If you're having a hard time figuring out how to do so contact someone in the staff, they'll gladly show you how.

  • Chatango:
We have a chatango as an on-forum chat. Avoid spam, flames or trolling the chat. Anonymous users should consider creating a name soon to avoid confusion. No posing as others. Also, no advertising in the chat. Repeat Offenders on this will be banned from the chat to cool off. If you wish to advertise your Forum then do so using the proper channels.

  • Other Accounts:
They're not allowed. Even if you've been here a while. NPCs are another story and handled with your account. While you are still only anchored to a few characters as a member, it is possible to get other characters via contests or by taking on Staff duties.

-General Forum Regulations

I. Suggestions and Complaints

In suggestions and complaints members can make suggestions or register complaints about certain things.

  • Speaking against something that the Staff did will not get you banned as long as you are reasonable about it. Present your issue in a calm and formal manner. However, if you go there to flame the staff you will be banned. The Staff expect anyone conversing here to refrain from personal attacks and bringing up old faults or personal grudges. This forum exists to potentially better the site, not bog it down in fighting.

  • In regards to plot suggestions, there are a lot of suggestions that the Staff receive over AIM, PM, and in the forum. The better detailed your description is the more likely it is to get approved, but don't be offended or down if your ideas don't get through. The Staff loves smaller mini-plots or side events that can be run during the Season long Story Arc as extra plot bits members can take part in. If you really want to catch the Staff's eyes then try to tailor your ideas to fit this sort of format.

II. General Chat

The General Chat is an open forum to discuss many things, however there are some things The Staff won't tolerate.

  • Do not spam in general, the site is fairly laissez-faire compared to some other boards. But if the Staff notice a pattern of spam, the hammer will drop.

  • No political topics. Politics are great, but on message boards it breeds to much hard feelings.

Random/Tabletop Roleplay Area

The General Chat area has a sub-forum known as the Random/Tabletop Roleplay Area. This section is to facilitate more fun for the community beyond the main RPG that's taking place. Here you can feel free to run your own "single-thread" roleplays or even organize and run a tabletop RPG. Hyakuji has a Dice Rolling code added to facilitate this.

NOTE: The dice rolling code is not a feature of the main site. No part of joining or roleplaying here involves the rolling of dice. Feel free to skip to the next segment if you have no interest in this aspect.

As for overall rules to this section the same OOC rules for the forum apply here. This means stuff as far as being respectful to the GM running the game and no extreme graphic content etc. It is up to the person GMing to ensure the players are familiar with the rules or can get the information they need. As far as setting one up the Staff recommends using two threads: one clearly labled IC and one labled OOC. Use the OOC to get players initially, set up characters and ask questions in the future so the IC thread can keep clean of mud and be a nice read for others.

To talk more specifically for tabletop games you'll be using the dice roll bbcode frequently. The syntax for this is as follows:

[*roll](NUMBER OF DICE)D(SIDES ON THE DIE)+(EXCESS)[*/roll]

First of all to actually use the code remove the asterisks as no bbcode uses these and its just for example then fill in each parenthesis with what you want and remove them. It should also be noted it does not matter whether you use a capital or lowercase d. So a completed example might look like:

[*roll]4D6+1[*/roll]

If you're familiar with tabletop roleplaying this syntax won't look that odd to you. However, to discuss it some in more detail. The example above would tell it to roll four six-sided dice and then add one to the result. You can leave the +excess bit off if that's not required. Unfortunately it automatically adds and gives the final result so for a game system where you need to see each die (Ex: White Wolf's Storyteller System) you'll simply have to set each die up itself like so:

[*roll]1d10[*/roll]
[*roll]1d10[*/roll]
[*roll]1d10[*/roll]
[*roll]1d10[*/roll]

So that would be rolling four ten-sided dice and seeing the individual result for each one. It should also be noted that a Roll button has been added in the posting window next to the one for the Image bbcode so if you're not a fan of typing out bbcode you can simply press it, type what you want into the window that pops up such as "4d6" and then it will fill in the rest for you.

There are some precautions that should be taken. When using the Dice Roll code it locks your post so you can never edit it again. So please please take your time and be sure you've used the right numbers and have all written parts to what you want; this is built in to prevent cheating so there's no work around.

As a special note, our dice code cannot handle negative modifiers. So, for example, if your game required a roll like 1d20-1 this is impossible. The Script cannot comprehend negative numbers. We apologize for this and if we can ever find a superior dice roller script we'll be sure to update. However, for the time being if you must make such a roll then make the regular roll and note the negative modifier beside it so the person running the game can do the math on their own.

As a final note on this section members can feel free to bring in friends to play that might not actually take part in the rest of the site. This is merely an aspect for fun in the community and the site always welcomes friendly people interested in roleplaying.

III. Graphics Workshop

The Staff leaves the graphics shops alone as long as they are Hyakuji focused. Other than that, they are pretty much autonomous.

IV. Welcome Forum

The welcome forum is where you can introduce yourself. If someone comes you don't like, please don't attack them or anything. This is to be a friendly community. Hate all you want, but keep it off the site.

V. Character Blogs
Zetaboards has a built in feature to allow each member their own personal blog. While they can have many uses, one popular suggestion is to use it as a Character Blog. What this means is that entries are to be written IC from the point of view of one of your characters. You may update it as much or as little as you wish. No one is required to fool with a blog, it's simply there as an experience of your chosing.

To access your blog, go to your Preferences and under Account Options will be "My Blog" clicking that for the first time lets you give the blog a title, describe what it will pertain to and also fill in an About Me. After this your blog is created and clicking My Blog takes you instantly to it where you may make entries in it and etc.

And remember, just because it's a blog doesn't mean it has to be your IC Journal. For example, Eiji might use his IC Blog as Eiji's notes on Wo Shing business and activity. Amaya could use hers as the Science Notes Lillian keeps on all her experiments. The possibilities are endless so if you want, try it out and have fun. If it's not your thing don't sweat.

-Now You Are Ready To Join! (Core Rules)

I. Join Forum

Congratulations! Now that you have read everything you can begin the process of joining the RPG! You need an approved character before you can post In-Character.

Right now only Non-Faculty Characters are available unless specifically told otherwise by the Staff. Students can begin at any grade level and are assumed to have always been around or are transfer students. To begin joining the RPG, enter the join forum and click on the topic for "Profile Template" then copy the

Quote:

Coded Text.

Which has the template you can use in it. Click make a new topic and fill this out for your character. This is the basic information you need. If you wish to add additional and more detailed information then feel free.

Every Player is allowed to make two separate characters. After some time staying active, contact the Staff about running a third character.

II. Things You Should Be Aware Of

  • Since this is after all a high school, starting out characters cannot have any sort of lethal weapons. This does not include things like bamboo or wooden staffs/swords. At times either for very specific backgrounds or items gained from Plots/Events one may obtain lethal-class weaponry. This is a story-focused rule.

  • Weapons not allowed in any way include any sort of explosive projectile weapons. Such as rocket launchers, grenades, flame throwers. This should be common sense. Such weapons are allowed in gag situations where no damage would be done and the ensuing blast would leave someone charred and smoking for comedic effect.

  • Elemancer type characters can only have 1 element type, water and ice are allowed as they are mere variants of the same thing, but not water and lightning for example.

  • Godmoddish powers like time manipulation, making complex things out of thin air, and mind control will not be approved at all; so keep it reasonable. Consider this... if the ability required automatic control of the other character or gleaming intricate personal knowledge it will not only be a very powerful ability, but also a hard one to facilitate posting.

  • Do not respond to other people's join topic if you aren't Staff.

  • Try to avoid PMing a staff member if no one has responded to your topic until some time has passed; at least 48 hours. Everyone gets busy sometimes and the Staff tries its best to get to character profiles promptly.

  • Approved Profiles will remain unlocked so you can edit onto the Personal History what's going on with your character as you please; as well as so you might easily add in rewards from Events. Please note, however, that at the time of approval your powers/items will be quoted by the Staffer so we will have a record of what you put and attempts to slip in/modify existing powers when it is not allowed will result in problems.

III. Schedule System & Classes

During the school year your student is expected to attend classes.

Classes
This is a school, you come here to learn... or at least go to class. Teachers in charge of the class will, of course, be teaching it. Do not worry, for this won't be as boring as normal school. Here, at Hyakuji High School, the campus has a very mixed and fun faculty, there will be field trips, class junctions, fundraisers, and many other planned activities.

Homeroom
Choose wisely who you wish to represent, as there will most likely be times when these homerooms will clash in either events or competitions to determine the superior homeroom; have some class pride! This class happens infrequently and typically ties in with major plotlines going on throughout the site.

School Schedule
Since time is abstracted for the forum and continuity is set by linked plotlines or by each player for their own characters, classes follow a similar flow. Each student character will have 3 classes that they focus on among a current pool of eight courses. These focus on electives or more interesting classes; from a roleplaying perspective. This is not to say these are the only classes that go on. Standard things like English and Math go on as well, but are assumed to take place "off camera."

At Hyakuji, players merely roleplay the most interesting "snapshots" of a school day.

Classes will be ran regularly by the teachers over them. These will be announced via the Intercom forum so always keep an eye there. Classes can sometimes build towards tests or other exams (usually of a practical nature) so get involved and do your best.

You can choose from the following classes:

  • Phys Ed
  • Science
  • Cooking
  • Survival Studies
  • Supernatural Studies
  • History
  • Advanced Demonology
  • The Arts

Class Attendence

The Staff and Faculty Players understand people cannot always make class threads due to real life issues.

Please note that if you are unable to get on and post for a class, it in no way counts against you. Provided you aren't actively posting in another thread as if you are skipping class, then it is merely assumed you attended class and just didn't speak up or do anything major.

Furthermore, if you get on to post and the class has already begun DO NOT post yourself coming in just at that moment. Instead, you can just make your first post as if you're already in your seat in the class having came in before it started. If for some plot-reason you WANT to come into class late then by all means do so... However, like all schools there are punishments for being late.

If you actively choose to be late to class or skip it there will be consequences. For such an offense, each teacher will have their own method of punishment devised.

School Uniforms

Like most Japanese high schools as depicted in anime, Hyakuji High School has its own uniforms. All students are assumed to be wearing their school uniform when on campus and class is in session unless otherwise noted. The current school uniform has been custom designed by forum member "A Grin Without A Cat." Consider the following image a frame of reference for what your student characters will be wearing every day to class:

Posted Image

There is also some choices to be had for each individual character and their uniform. Here is the detailed info on the uniform itself:

  • Blazers
    • School emblem only appears on school blazers. At Hyakuji, blazers are typically worn in the Fall/Winter seasons and left off during the Spring/Summer.
    • Girls: Blue, Boys: Brown.

  • Ties/Ribbons
    • Girls: Avaliable in Thin Satin Brown, or Cute Cotton Blue.
    • Boys: Only avaliable in Blue.

  • Sweater & Sweater Vest
    • A sweater and sweater vest is available for boys and girls, only in brown (with blue collar, arm and hemline accents.)

  • Shirt

    • White shirt is white.

  • Skirts
    • Mini Skirt is available in tan brown
    • Knee length skirt is available in tan brown with double white strips on the hem.
    • Full length skirt is not pictured. It is also tan brown and worn by tough chicks with swag.

  • Socks
    • Ankle socks, Knee high socks, and Absolute Territory socks must be black or white.

  • Shoes
    • Students are asked to wear loafers in black or brown.

IV. Character Advancement
It comes naturally with any RPG or telling and long-running story that, as the story progresses, characters will advance in skill and power. In the past, character advancement was tied to the progression of the Main Plot story arcs known as Seasons. To keep the same general pace these had, but avoid having to rush stories to fit the same timetable we are divorcing character progression from the pace of the main plot. All character advancement will be handled in the same fashion:

  • All active characters will upgrade their abilities every six months.
  • These six-month upgrade windows occur during the months of June and December. A News forum post will always announce their start.
  • Any players that are around and active during the period will be allowed to post an update to all their active characters' powers for approval within each character's respective profile and ultimately edit that into the top once the Staff sign off, so we can quote it as usual.
  • Character Advancement consists of one additional new power/technique/form/ability/etc or upgrading/improving an existing one.
  • If you prefer to gain your new ability due to the flow of your character's narrative, we ask that you simply go ahead and get the power approved during June/December and then just wait and have your character learn/gain it at the appropriate time for your story.
  • Brand new characters made shortly before such an advancement period will not be eligible.

What constitutes as active? If you're around to make the updates then that's already a pretty good sign you are active. Those with extreme circumstances and notified in the going away forum will be allowed to make-up if they miss the window. The Staff does their homework, we'll know if someone is trying to game this system.

V. Combat Expanded:

Combat is part of Hyakuji, though it is not the primary genre as Hyakuji has no one true genre. During combat some things you should be aware of.

  • You begin limited in your abilities. When you post please try and keep it reasonable with your powers.

  • Make only a few attacks (one to three) and then give your opponent a chance to respond when you fight. Do not go all out with 100 punches in one turn unless that relates to an ability your character has.

  • Do not say you landed a hit on your opponent, this is considered god modding and will be dealt with harshly. Godmodding is any forceful action you take upon a character. In the most simple terms, this means that if you swing a punch at someone you simply write as such. Your character is swinging the punch. It's the reciever who decides the results whether it be that the punch connects, they roll out of the way, etc.

  • If there is an OOC dispute of what exactly you can do, first try to resolve it by yourselves. If it lasts for more than one OOC post each take it out of the thread to PM or IM. If things still can't be resolved ask a staff member to make a call.

  • Be aware of your opponent and your relative strength. If there is a clear gap typically it is assumed the one with a much higher ability wins. Also note though, just because one person is weak in an area, doesn't mean they are weak overall and can't use another area to counter a move.

  • Use common sense, this RPG is meant to be fun, and don't be a jerk. We're all telling a story, so don't take fights too seriously.

  • In general, characters can only die with the consent of their owner. Otherwise, like many anime, losing a battle results in characters rendered unconscious/passed out/etc. There might be consequences from a loss, such as being captured, but only a Player can deem their character's time of death.

Example of good sportsmanship:

Quote:

Triyun:
Triyun moves in to attack Muhrtag swinging down his sword at the fellow social science teachers head.

Muto:
Muhrtag brings his demonic chain up to counter the sword and then swings to hit Triyun.

Triyun:
Triyun takes a hit, but his armor prevents any serious damage to his abdomen from occurring. Gasping for air as the wind was knocked out of him, the ninja jumps back and tosses a kunai at Muhrtag's shoulder, he would pay for eating the last jelly donut.

Muto:
Muhrtag evades to the side but his shoulder is sliced slightly open by the kunai flying past him.

Notice how both players have taken some hits, as well as only done a small amount of attacking giving the other a chance to respond to their attacks and not forcing them on the other. This is what you want to do.

VI. A Few More Things Before Submitting Your Profile

  • Please run a spell checker if you know you are not a good speller. Spell Checks are readily available even online now. The site does not discriminate based on writing ability, but this is a simple and easy tool to help you out.

  • Don't get discouraged if you aren't immediately approved and their are some problems with your profile. This is to streamline things usually or make you have a better profile in the end. Approval isn't meant to be some gatekeeper.

  • Use the tags provided for you in the correct places like:
Code:

[b]Name[/b]

  • Students must dorm on campus. There are 3 available dorms and you merely pick one as your residence in your Join Profile. Threads about your room must be made in the Dorm you've chosen. If you'd like to set plot-official roommates then this at the member's own discresion.

-So My Profile Has Been Approved, I'm Ready To Start Role Playing. What Now?

I. Check the Intercom

The Intercom is the location where In-Character, school-related news will be shared along with class thread notifications. Usually when stuff turns up there, it's probably important. The Intercom is opened up for additional content as well. Clubs that want to utilize it for advertising or sharing information should get in touch with the staff. From recruitment drives, announcing events or maybe even working up a club radio show, the sky is the limit!

II. Select an Open Roleplay or Start Your Own

Take note of where you roleplay. You cannot start RPing in a topic that says closed or semi-closed or gives any specific instructions for joining. If a topic says nothing or open, you can feel welcome to join it.

If you want to make your own topics go ahead, people may join them, people may not. If it is a few hours since you posted it and no one has responded please do not get discouraged and think no one likes you. There is a pinned thread under the General Chat area to advertise open threads that need activity.

When starting threads, or replying in one try to post in the third person, like you're reading a book almost. Asterisks for actions are generally not the most stylish way to present a story. While we don't discriminate based on ANY writing ability, solid 3rd person style is the preference. The best thing to do is to post kinda like this,

Quote:

Bob looked up at the stars, smiling to himself. "Gee, those sure are stars, alright," he mumbled to himself.

Best thing to do? Look at a book. Copy the style.

III. Classroom Etiquette

To avoid clutter, try to keep posting between teacher posts to two or three unless the teacher says you're free to talk.

Disobedience and a blatant disrespect for common sense rules (No smoking in class, no pets, etc.) will be resolved in whatever way the teachers please. Be a good sport about it, it's all in the name of fun.

IV. Joining a Club/Organization

Anyone is welcome to join a club or organization (provided they meet any critera the group has). Some clubs are combat building up related, others are more geared towards entertainment. To join a club simply show up at the meeting and you will be in it. Keep an eye out for these topics.

M4sh3d P0t4t03s: This is implemented into the join category so that the Staff know you've read the rules. The answer? 'There is no spoon' for days that are even when the profile was created and 'The proof is in the pudding' for days that are odd. In other words, if you create your profile on an odd day, then use the odd one for your answer.

For the OOC info thread of the club/group assume the person who runs said group has authority in the thread.

V. Attempting Rumors

Rumors have been part of Hyakuji since the beginning of the RPG. To attempt rumors it is recommended you do so in a group. The rumors are listed by the Admin/Moderator that will take care of the rumor. PM this person to start it. Rumors are not meant to be easy to solve. It is highly unlikely that hacking and slashing alone will get you through a rumor.

If you have rumors you'd like to suggest for the site to use or even organize and run one yourself please contact the forum member Cypriss to get these worked on and approved.

VI. Requesting a Signature

There are many at Hyakuji with graphic making skills who can make you a signature for your character. Also keep in mind to make a small signature, a look around the board will give you an idea for what that means.

VII. Requesting a Dorm Room
There are 3 Dorms on Hyakuji's campus each one graciously built on donations from some of the more prominent families in the city. These dorms are Yuki (a Co-Ed dorm), Yoshima (a Boys Only dorm) and Fudo (a Girls Only dorm). All students are expected to stay in one of these Dorms (though at times plot points may overule this) and you select one during Profile Creation.

PLEASE NOTE: By definition a Co-Ed dorm equates a housing building that accommodates boys and girls. However, this does not mean girls and boys may share a room together. Under no circumstances is this ever allowed. This is what a co-ed dorm is and what they have always been. To be more specific: Yuki uses the format where each floor is divided alternating between gender. Meaning that one floor will be all boys, the next up girls, then boys and so forth.

VIII. Clubs and Organizations
To create a club, you must follow these directions:

  • First, only clubs that involve school are allowed to be created. Organizations do not have this limitation.
  • In order to create a club/organization, one must have a Faculty Supervisor (a teacher char) and at least 5 interested members (excluding the supervisor). Organizations can be more lax about the Supervisor.

IX. Posting Limitations
There is no limit to the number of threads your characters can be in. However, this comes with some level of expectation from the Staff. As Players, you should always place priority on posting in Events/Missions/Etc. where participation is required by many people to continue and failure to keep active will drag along major plotlines.

This is basically a matter of common sense: don't bite off more than you can chew.

To alleviate problems dragging down Events/Missions the Staff/Thread Runner will now be permitted to skip characters (if they have been given ample time but fail to post) or likewise let villain characters score auto-hits (in combat situations).

This also means you'll be in charge of your own characters' continuity. Again, this is a matter of common sense. If two threads are happening at the same time or roughly in the same time period chances are the same character can't be in both places.

Site-Wide Events
Every "Season" (the term used to describe a section of game time in-game that usually spans a few IC months and is called thus to mimic Anime) will have one long reaching site-wide Story Arc.

This will usually involve larger than life problems and issues that will reach out to involve as many players as are willing to participate. Such Site-Wide Events will be marked with a special [Event] tag. We encourage everyone to take part in the Season's plot, but you are by no means required to. Whether you want to pop in just for the bits that interest you, follow the main plot closely to its conclusion or have nothing to do with it at all the choice is entirely yours.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These rules will be updated periodically be sure to check back especially when the version changes.
