Recent Bannings, A Clone, Everyone Read

Posted by Hiro_Tsukasa (Admins) at Apr 7 2013, 04:31 PM. 11 comments

Well, we have several big issues to go over as a whole. With the long gap we had from any major drama cropping up until the sexual harassment BS awhile ago, I was hoping for another nice spree. Apparently that's not the case. So here we go...

I'm tackling it all in one large post so everything is just on the table. Despite the pun in the title/sub-title, there's only two major things. As some might have perceived or been made aware of, we have had a few recent bannings and also a Clone forum crop up.

If all this is totally irrelevant for your activities here then I apologize this is going on. Feel free to cut past a lot of this and just skip down until you see the red-texted header. The rest is direct, detailed and clear discussion on matters you probably don't care about either way.

Roll back some days. Since the first two bannings we are discussing were obvious situations, the idea was to just let it be resolved with the banning and stop there. No need to drag out a news post and stir things up that should be resolved with the banning, right? In one particular case, Asagi, we came to a consensus that it was for the best to let him dive out gracefully rather than put on blast the embarrassing facts that lead to his banning.

Apparently letting people gracefully dive out isn't supposed to be an option for us to take. Since then the site has been trolled, more drama has been brewed even at the cost of making bad perceptions between other forums and here; which is sad in my opinion.

Apparently we again need to go over the rules for respecting other people on the forum and matters of sexual harassment. So here we are. I'll be going over in finer detail paraphrasing the play-by-play for each of the recent bannings and then have some stuff to discuss with everyone about the copycat forum.

I thought it would be good to not drag stuff like this all across everywhere, but apparently that was the wrong decision. I'm human. I make mistakes and bad decisions; we all do. So the goal with this news post is just to be as transparent as possible about the recent events going on:

Eaon
There were some issues with his personal plot, particularly in the way they conflicted with how the background of the site needed to be set up; also there was an issue with a handful of complaints from several members about the level of graphic content in some of the threads. This was brought to my attention. I looked into it; standard stuff. Confirmed the problem, planned on tackling it myself if nobody else got to it once I had a break in time from my Exit Portfolio. Joked about the situation, which many were already aware of, a bit in the chatbox before hopping offline for the night.

Standard stuff, we're a lax site that tries not to sweat the small stuff; it wasn't a world-ending issue or some mega-drama. Nothing that called on immediately being locked down. Being that I've routinely mocked my own characters for far worse (case in point, Hiro's exaggerated womanizing hit the point of being such a cliche attached to him that it was actually difficult to make headway on developing his character beyond that), it seemed pretty far beyond the zone of maliciousness.

All this went down going into the weekend. As anyone paying remote attention knows, my Friday evenings are usually ate up by Vanguard (though more recently with apartment hunts) and Saturday with the Tabletop group I run and then hanging out afterwards. Getting back in late on Saturday, I hopped on to a rather passive aggressive PM from Eaon stating that someone had let him know there were problems with his plot and berated me for having time to say anything about in the chatbox, but not contacting him.

Since that seemed a little extreme, I began my reply by stating it had been a busy week for me and there were a handful things I was hoping to tackle on Hyakuji (this included) so there was no reason to act snarky about things. And then proceeded to get to the meat of things and laid out the problems at hand. Also, afterwards, detailed that I couldn't be considered responsible for everything everyone posts in every last thread. Yeah, I'd like to read every word that's roleplayed on Hyakuji because I love the site; but that's unrealistic for our size. I admitted fault and that one of us should have flagged it beforehand, but regardless the issues are what they are and we needed to hash it out.

In return I got an angry tirade about how his response was warranted because he had a much worse life than mine and still keeps up on all his forums despite real life obligations. I won't go into the details, because I don't think it's my place to oust someone's IRL troubles and regardless of what was said that just seems like a low thing to do, but he then went on to talk crap at the Staff as a whole suggesting it showed our general incompetence that nobody had contacted him earlier about all of this.

He then began a long point by point attack at each issue that had been brought up justifying why nothing was wrong with what happened and why he shouldn't have to change them. For the graphic content he asserted that nobody was actually complaining and that this was just made up and instead he has only heard praise of his writing. He asserted that the posts were violent, but did not glorify death and instead just showed superior writing skills instead of just glossing past things. He also stated that I should have nothing against someone taking the time to develop a good story (Which, any logical person reading this knows I do not; of course).

He then, rather out of the blue, brought up the matter of extreme sexual content and devoted several sentences assuring me that no concern should be given and that it was past even it's potential worst parts. I found this particularly interesting because I never once mentioned anything about sexual content nor had anyone contacted the Staff about such things. I do wonder where this came from?

He then went on a tangent about offending religions, which much like the sexual content I did not bring up at all, and to use his own words:

Quote:

"If someone's offended by the fact that hasn't been brought up yet, then qq I don't have time to waste on their political correct bullshit, if they don't like it they don't have to read it."

The "hasn't" refers to the issue that his plot asserts that all afterlives and similar realms of life and death beyond real world locations that exist, originally spawned from a single one tied to the big NPC of his storyline and in the end the set-up of Hyakuji's world would be perfectly explained thanks to what happens with his character and his story. I don't think we need to tread over why this is an issue. As I explained to him, we use a motif that basically sets up that all supernatural/religion/mythology type things exist altogether and at the same time.

Video game fans might realize this mirrors the Megaten franchise and that's for good reason besides my personal favor for it: it gives the most potential amount of people the largest agency to tell their stories the way they want it to be told without pre-set things regarding the cosmology of the site being set in stone beforehand. It also, generally, prevents someone from deciding to do one thing and that locking out everyone else ever (Well, I already have my person as the son of an Angel, so you can't be the reincarnation of Amaterasu that's not real because angels blah blah etc).

Want to have you Demigod Son of Zeus put the smack down on another person's Demon Prince who rose up from Makai to understand the human world, go for it! Want to craft a tale where students get swept up in the age old grudge between Shiva and Thor who crossed paths once, go for it! I explained that to Eaon. I'm not sure how you can get from there to misconstruing it into that there's some issue of offending people's religions. However, while that's not the real issue at hand at all, I think it's a little ridiculous to be that callous about it.

I then got berated more for interfering with his master plot and was told that once it was done he didn't care what happened that it could be asserted that his NPC was a liar and making it all up. Though that still sort of just sidesteps the issue rather than tries to work together and resolve things. I was then told it was bullshit that I swooped in and froze his plotline (in fact, I did not. I myself never told anyone not to post. I mentioned I'd contact him about the problems if nobody else did when I had a chance. But we already know this, or should, don't we? Hrm, wonder where that idea came from then?)

I was once again reminded how terrible his life is and much worse than mine and blows my petty problems out of the water, but he still had time to get his stuff looked into; so I should too. Again, don't think I need to detail out why comparing lives and "who has it worse" is a terrible way to frame things; especially when starting to argue at someone. Was then told my claim of not having time didn't fly and, despite all assertions above that everything with what he's doing is perfectly fine and we are the ones at fault, suggested he would talk about what needs to be done to change it. However, before that could occur, I needed to drop my attitude problem and stop giving cop out excuses like my life is busy.

This matter got discussed a bunch in Staff HQ. Opinions were varied. If I had thought there was even a shred of respect in his reply then I would have just ignored all the rage and pushed pass to try and see if anything could be done to reach a common ground. However, I feel that was blatantly and clearly not the case. Nobody sincerely willing to work out what they already have created to fix an issue prefaces that with a screen+ or so worth full of paragraphs detailing point by point why you're shit, the rest of the Staff are shit, the issues are shit and what they already had planned is superior in every way.

In the past, how we did things on Hyakuji before, this would have ran into a news post and been some spectacle of argument and debate before a decision was made. Ever since things started really ramping up into the best run I think we've ever had kicking off with the Kingdom Hearts Saga, one of my biggest goals has been to do stuff better. Better story content. Always finishing plots even if we have to modify initial plans. Better in how we handle big issues on the site, drama and how I handle them personally. I try to be an open book. I don't act like I'm some perfect person with a perfect record. I've done shit things before. I've been in the wrong. I'll never try to deny that.

Bottom line, here was an issue where there were problems with the nature of someone's personal plot both in its structure and content. Any time that happens the goal is to work together and find a way every problem is resolved and hopefully all parties can still be happy with what they've got in the end. It's not something that should roll into a banning.

I saw a situation where Eaon did not acknowledge any of the problems and instead just wrote them off, didn't respect me, didn't respect the rest of the Staff and didn't respect the members (who he claims are fictional, in any case) that reported the graphic content. There's clearly no common ground to work towards there. With this whole thing apparently involving time so much, I'll just say it. It's not worth my time nor anyone else's on the Staff's time to have kept slogging through all the passive-aggressive tirades and insults attempting to do what we think should be right about the situation.

So just so we're all clear on these kinds of issues going forward: If there's a problem with your post/plotline/etc. be that for site continuity reasons or issues like going to far with certain content, the way it will always be handled is by being contacted by the Staff and talking it out.

We don't just blindly go on witch hunts. If you wrote, "David was shot in the arm and he winced in pain while the sleeve of his shirt slowly stained a deep crimson," and someone flagged that in as being too violent, we're not going to randomly antagonize you. Whoever it gets reported to will look at it, another staffer will look at it, I'll likely look at it if I'm not already that another staffer. We'd talk to that person and try to make the situation clear that they are being silly and if this is coming from some personal place then perhaps they can be accommodated in another way (utilizing forum ignore, for example) or perhaps just that Hyakuji isn't the right fit for them. You can't please everyone. You kill yourself trying to.

An issue with a thread/post and bannable offenses are like two opposite shores of the same ocean. It's not something that's jumped from one way to another or traversed across easily; unless you rent a boat and go full steam ahead.

At the same time, I will also say this, Hyakuji is not some paragon of perfect democracy. We tried that before, it doesn't work; it makes more drama because people abuse it. I've been made the villain plenty of times. There's no reputation there for me to save face on and I am intimately aware of that. Don't think you can play games on this kind of stuff just to get your way.

And until the day people start "je thinking they should (and do) pay me $20" then I don't care what you think of me or the rest of the Staff, but nobody has any place to tell us how we should manage our time in regards to the forum. Nobody is holding you here and chaining you in place. You're free to roleplay elsewhere or just leave if that's what you feel is best for you.

Asagi
So, next order of business.

If you're new then you're probably unaware because we tried to downplay the aftermath to not dwell on such crappy things, but not long ago we had a big issue with sexual harassment. We had a discussion about that and how it relates to respecting other members on the forum. No names were given, but I did issue a Final Warning to those involved; because personally whether it's online or off I think this is some serious stuff. The rest of the Staff happened to all be in line about this. Asagi stepped forward and admitted to be one of those at fault (which was true) and voluntarily opted to leave the forum.

Does anyone want to hazard a guess what he inevitably got banned for after his return before you read the next paragraph?

Multiple complaints came in again, of the same nature as before. Beyond this we were shown his own opinions on the matter which, and this is my opinion here, were sickening. A final warning had been given, same issue cropped up again so he was banned; plain and simple. As I mentioned way back at the start, given what had happened we wanted to just let this be a case where things bowed out gracefully. Cause, honestly, I think what came out of all of this was pretty embarrassing.

Naturally, I won't name names of who reported or gave any info for their own protection; regardless of who plays the victim, they were the ones victimized. I will however, paraphrase from his own words, Asagi's stance on things. He stated that he prefers girls that he can have his way with and don't put up any resistance; using people just because they'll allow him to do so. He loves the feeling of doing such and characters like Shiro give him an outlet for it all.

I don't think I need to comment any on that; it speaks for itself. I will only say one thing on it. Nobody wanted to air it all out like this. Asagi is the only one to blame for this happening. I made it clear in public that if he continued starting trouble and trolling over being banned while acting like he had done nothing wrong (which he did both via Kara and through getting a member on another forum to come over for no other reason than to kick up drama) that we'd just be upfront with everything. And, as we've already covered, I don't play games anymore with stuff like this.

As far as going over the issue itself, I'll just say this. There was a lot of stuff flying around about "well it was off the forum so it doesn't count/matter" and that's valid in a lot of cases.

If two people argue over IM then whatever; that's your thing. If you can't come to an understanding then just block them and don't deal with them. Use Forum Ignore. Be the bigger person and just avoid interaction to them in the chatbox. If that's not spilling into the forum then whatever. I've always said that's my personal policy. You don't have to like me. You can hate me. I don't care. S'long as you respect me, then I'll respect you and we can both do our things on Hyakuji and have a good time. It's not rocket science.

But I didn't make Hyakuji just so anyone could abuse it for getting their rocks off taking advantage of female members (or dudes for the matter, that door can swing both ways) on the site.

Sexual harassment is never okay and I don't care if it happens on the forum, via PM or over some personal chat client.

Again, there won't be witch hunts where someone can just report some random made up BS on you in some hyper conspiracy to mastermind them getting you banned (though if that was the case, it's a whole other string of problems). Contrary to beliefs on our level of ineptitude, we do our homework before taking any action.

Bottom line, if it (sexual harassment) happens to one of our members, by one of our members, then it is a problem for the site. Period. There is no debating that.

Kara
And the last banning discussion. I'd like to preface this with two things:

1) I'm aware Kara is a well liked member.

You can feel free to be mad at me over her banning. I'll just say this. Given the line-up of all this, it might seem like we're in Ban City. However, a permanent banning is not something done lightly. Viewed in the scope of our eights years, you'll find that the number of people permanently banned is pretty ridiculously low all things considered.

2) By all rights, Kara should have never been on the forum for any of you to meet in the first place.

She was on Hyakuji long ago, before Zetaboards, under the name Anael. She was coincidentally involved in lots of drama/the mastermind behind them, had part in a Hyakuji clone site (which, for those keeping tabs, we opted never to do anything about because in that instance, it far more closely straddled the line of similar idea/blatant clone and wasn't maliciously aimed at Hyakuji) and reported to the Staff numerous times for copying people's coding/character elements they had made themselves that obviously ran too far beyond just being "similar" in some way.

That doesn't scratch the surface, but it's ancient history and I'm just making a point so I don't see a reason for a play-by-play or me doing the research to finely construct one. All these things kept building up and she was ultimately banned after being caught using multiple accounts.

We don't need every last specific piece of background history, but at this time I myself had far much less of a say in how problem situations were handled around this time. So, I went to her directly to try and help diffuse it all and just give her a chance to close out one account, stick with whichever and let everything be cool. Rules were as clear then as they are now on it. You don't multi-account, period. She denied up and down the situation despite us having irrefutable proof and ultimately started outright raging at me over it.

Thus, I pulled out any support I had in her favor and let things fall as they were: the aforementioned banning.

Obviously, when the jump to Zeta happened (given how it happened) there was no way to just port all the perma-bannings that had been set. However, it wasn't immediately relevant and I always wanted to believe that if someone cropped back up then perhaps they'd have changed. Shin Hyakuji was all about a fresh start. For me, for Hyakuji, for everyone; so why not extend that even to those who had been banned? It was a choice that remained irrelevant for years.

So why was Kara banned?

It should be obvious to anyone that knows what has happened. It's not complex. There's no masterplot conspiracy going on (I'd direct you to /x/ if you're thinking so rather than here).

She was banned for what is known without any doubts. If I counted other factors and some speculation then she should be banned five times over. However, make of me what you will, I can discern fact from speculation. Kara was banned for blatantly breaking a very clear rule.

There's a whole mountain of incidental things. None of which in my eyes, to be fair, are something that should get someone banned for individually. She's been coincidentally involved in just about every piece of drama the forum has had since she came back. I have more reported complaints than I can count that have come in about her copying the coding someone has made for their profile, ripping chunks from character backgrounds/powers far beyond the point where it slips over the line of being a similar idea and into copycatting. Posting on behalf of banned members. Disrespecting the Staff by making light of such issues.

There's the fact she's a habitual liar and something about that just rubs me the wrong way. One needs only look at the fact that once it was discovered Kara = Anael, I tried talking to her about this just to say that Shin was a clean slate so no worries only for her to swear up and down she wasn't Anael. Then later this answer changed to: oh I remembered I was, but I don't remember anything that happened. Curiously, I've seen blatant proof that Kara can not only eagerly acknowledge that she recalls she was Anael, but that she knows plenty of clear details of what happened when she was on Hyakuji before. Or the blatant re-use of excuses for any number of things to drum up pity while she's actually up to something else instead that, when viewed together entirely, invalidate one another making it impossible for either case to be true.

But again, I acknowledge that such things are no grounds for banning someone. Merely a point of showing their character and what's important to them.

And ultimately, what she was honestly banned for, creating a Clone site of Hyakuji. The rules are explicitly clear about this. Clones will not be tolerated ever, in any way. This discussion is long enough so I won't waste everyone's time going on the point by point list of all the ways it's far beyond "well it's just the same idea" and prancing in the zone of copycat.

Anyone that knew about this ahead of time without a bone to pick at me or an e-peen to preserve, can look at what was made and to Hyakuji and it's all too clear. Distinctions aren't hard to make.

Let alone the fact that action all but gives away intention.

Regardless of the front about "just having a drama-free place" Kara's goal in doing this is more than clear. The Staff has always been very transparent on Clone sites. We prefer not to affiliate with other high school RPG's, that's a personal choice. If you're making something with a similar concept and talk to us, then I can't see it being anything other than 99% of the time we're all cool; and will probably help you out in some capacity.

If it's different enough and it doesn't fall into that one category then we'll probably want to link up (see HiHou), if not we'll wish you well anyways.

If you're not connected to Hyakuji at all then chances are any similarities are just that in the first place (see AHS which began roughly around the same time as Hyakuji, yet we only crossed paths years later), and we'll wish you well.

We've even offered people using wholesale parts of our rules or site elements we've designed for nothing but a little head nod to us, if they really wanted to use them/develop out from them to fit their vision. As they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I think it's awesome to have sites connected like that.

If there was sincerity in this, if there was anything besides maliciousness and playing games then I fail to see how in all the time this was being planned nobody stopped to think "Hey, we should just hit up Hiro and talk about it." Let's not sit here and play stupid about the issue.

Kara knew what she was doing, did it in the way she did intentionally and every action at every turn has been to try and play the victim and garner pity. Bottom line, if it wasn't such a blatant copycat then there wouldn't be an issue to begin with.

See the above examples, if it had been such a case then I and I'd like to think I can speak for the rest of the Staff would've said "ah, hope that works for them then" or something to similar effects and be about our day. We all have better things to do with our time than sit about looking for trouble to have to slog through.

Listen, we don't hate spin-offs or rivals; that's clear.

Everyone knows there's a certain site that has a sordid history with Hyakuji. Let's not dance around with "that" site nonsense: I am talking about Niwa Nights. Bottom line, here are the facts. I joined Niwa. I endorsed it, was eager about affiliating. I was on board about that shit. It's a perfect example of similar in concept, unique execution and a damn lot of its own flair and style. As it should be, regardless of where we stand now I've know Mak for a long time; he knows his stuff and can come up with great ideas.

Were there differences of opinions? Yes. Were there arguments? Yes. Was I entirely in the right and justified? No; and I'll never pretend to be. Has drama happened? Yeah. Is there some lingering feelings in the air of bad blood between our sites? Yeah, but that's not by my choice. I've long moved past it, believe what you will, and if there ever comes a time when everyone involved is willing to set the past aside then consider me first in line to affiliate and be glad to do so, set that in stone and not think over it anymore.

But it is what it is. The only thing I can do is decide how I wanted to handle it after the fact. And that's what I've been trying to do. Focus on Hyakuji, my only real interest, and let other people do their own thing. If somebody comes to Hyakuji to start trouble, put an end to it. If somebody from Hyakuji is starting trouble elsewhere, put an end to it. Neither scenario ought to happen, so I think it's right to treat them both the same.

I'm allowed my own opinion on the matter, everyone's entitled to an opinion, but to this day nobody has been banned for being a member at both places and I sincerely try to crack down anytime someone from here is starting trouble there; or elsewhere for that matter. I don't care why. My only interest is Hyakuji doing it's thing and having a good time with it.

As I am not some super hero, I do not care what happens everywhere else in the world. Until it's shoved right into my face or causing a problem at our forum itself, I don't spare a passing thought to such stuff. More importantly though, the actual issues there never had anything to do with matters like copycatting. I cannot make it any more clear than that. If you want to keep on that I've got some Xanadu Speed Chess-level plot going on regarding Niwa, that's all on you and your thing to deal with.

But, that's the difference here and there.

Kara is in the wrong on this. Hyakuji was blatantly copied. No permission was asked. No apologies have been given. Heck, she's even ripping site skins wholesale and filing off the copyrights despite the creator's asking for people not to do so; it's not hard to map out someone's intentions and their character when so many things line up. She's actively targeting Hyakuji's members to get them over there and all that's going to do, ultimately, is hurt both places in the end. I've been lied about. The reality of certain situations and people's actions have been twisted.

If her intentions were what she stated them to be, then this is just about the exact opposite of how one would conduct themselves in pursuing those goals. There is no way anyone, especially college-aged, could shoot so far off the mark "accidentally" choosing to make such choices.

Fast Times At Clone High
So then here we are. The rules are clear. Clone sites are not to be tolerated (keep in mind, there's a very clear line between two sites with a similar concept and someone making a copycat of Hyakuji and we are aware of that).

Cutting past all the crap, there's no doubt about what we're dealing with here. The Staff has been discussing the matter and while we have differing opinions on what to do about it, there is one element that has unanimous agreement: Kara's copied Hyakuji to create a blatant clone with malicious intent towards our site; this is a permanently bannable offense.

So here is what's happening.

Kara has already been banned. Those previous bans are staying as is. Those who assisted Kara in planning this and setting it up will be banned. There's no doubt to anyone on the Staff about whether this is an issue of a clone site or not and that Kara has to be banned. You've seen, in as transparent and direct of a manner as I can give, why each banning happened and can feel free to draw your own conclusions.

In the past, the rule about copycat stuff was taken as a free pass to go balls to the walls with trolling and other malicious acts (and encouraging as much of the site as possible to do so as well) in the justification we were in the right. That's obviously not the right way to act, and I'd like to discourage anyone passionate over the issue from doing so.

I know some already have, either from admitting it to me yourself or people slinging it in my face like I masterminded it. Some people on the site are very passionate about Hyakuji. Passionate people tend to do impassioned things. I appreciate that on a certain level, to be honest. It brings a grin that I've been able to create and work on something that you have enjoyed so much that you care to that degree.

But, I need to be clear, that doesn't justify such actions.

I can't go back and change what people have already done. That happens when you only learn about something after it already happened. Past is the past for a reason. The only thing I have any power to say about the matter now is making the Staff's stance clear going forward.

We are not looking to start trouble.

We do not want any members on Hyakuji taking things into their own hands out of passion or anger.

If you're upset, talk it over with friends, I'm always willing to talk if I'm around. If you have to then channel your time and energy into something, do something productive either on Hyakuji or IRL rather than dwelling on things like that.

Now that it's been made clear, don't do crap that's going to wrap around and make a problem for you here.

Like I said earlier, my goal for some time now has been to look at how we did things before and try to chart out how it can be handled better. So instead, this is what's up:

READ THIS:
The three bannings are remaining.

Those involved assisting Kara in plotting and setting this up are going to be banned.

They're not open to discussion or re-interpretation. The only one that could potentially be so is Eaon's case. Only human ya know, I can make mistakes and change a decision in light of a better understanding. However, his own actions suggest to me that it is not worth putting in any work to find out otherwise.

I'm not going to debate it or argue with you. Hate me if you want. Cast me as the villain. None of this is new or shocking.

If it makes you feel better to rant at me go ahead because I am not hard to contact (you've got AIM/MSN+Trillian/PM and PM over Chatango so take your pick), but know I won't be answering so you're wasting your time.

I'm not going to beg anyone to stay or plead my case or play up my feelings or make a gambit for anyone's pity.

If you've gone this far from the start, then say it with me folks: I'm not playing games.

Major rules were broken. People were banned. A cloned site was made in clear response and we have a zero tolerance policy about that. This is not solving some complex algebra equation.

Nobody else is being banned connected to this unless they do something that clearly warrants it. But at that point, it's not a case of being connected there or being here, there or anywhere. It's a case of the rules here and causing problems here.

If you want to leave Hyakuji for Kara's clone then feel free. Hope that works out for you.

If you're sticking here, let's get back to some RP's and stride past this BS, neh?

Wanna be on both? Cool, have a blast with it.

We'll never deny or change stance on what Kara has made. We'll never say otherwise if our opinion is asked. But at the same time, I'd like to think just wanting to roleplay somewhere with your friends has no additional maliciousness behind it.

You won't be banned.

You won't be antagonized on Hyakuji and if you are, then let me know ASAP because we're looping back to that disrespecting members thing and you should then let us do our job.

I'll say this though, I wonder about the logic for anyone wanting to join a site founded on the fact people are pissy that they got banned for clear reasons off Hyakuji, bound by mutual hate for me and some having to go under pseudonyms after all the BS they're know for; designed and commandeered by a manipulator, proven copycat and habitual liar. There's no future in something like that.

But that's just my opinion, you're free to not care about it or disagree. I'm only stating it because I promised myself this one post would be transparent and clear on all the issues.

So there ya go, we all know Hiro's opinion. There it is. All out, upfront. I have nothing else to say on the matter once this goes up and personally don't plan on devoting any more time towards discussing it or explaining myself beyond this post.

Also, we can talk a little about "oh Hiro's so mad" and what not. This post? This isn't anger. This is business.

Am I upset? Yes. What's happened is extremely disrespectful. Both for what I and the Staff have invested in Hyakuji, as well as every single member that's going full force to contribute whether that is just posting and having fun or crafting up larger plotlines themselves for the enjoyment of others. That doesn't even begin to encroach all the lies and twistedness spiraling out in the aftermath.

It would be stupid to try and say I'm not. If there is any major feeling I have, it's disappointment. Namely, being disappointed in certain people I was very fond of/put a lot of stock in their opinion and the choices they have made when all this was being plotted in the background. But it is what it is. What happened, happened. I'm not going to sit and lose time stressing over it now.

As I will always tell anyone, you don't have to like me to be on Hyakuji. You can hate me. I'm totally cool with that. Site is big enough we can all keep out of each other's ways and I get sick enough of this crap so I'm not going to go out of my way to kick anything up with you.

If it's a particular concern of yours, let me know and I'll be sure other Staffers can handle your stuff. We're all different ages on here, but I mean come on... of all the interests and hobbies that someone could have, we're choosing one about people crafting stories together. There's some inherent maturity in there somewhere, right? We can push past something like that. We can not like each other and I won't lose sleep over it, you shouldn't either.

I'm not going to play games and manipulate you just so I am well liked across the board. I'd rather every last one of you claim me the villain and I'll go down in a blaze of glory knowing I played things straight, than have to rock what I love doing while having the fact exist that I'm knowingly toying with your emotions and feelings to get what I want out of the situation.

Just like I'm not going to fight tooth and nail so I look like I'm Justice personified and appear perfect about this entire fiasco. I'm not perfect. Never have been. Never will be. Never can be; no one can.

I'd take your mutual understanding over being well liked any day of the week.

Some people from Hyakuji's side have done some stuff they shouldn't have in response. Blame me for not making this post sooner, if you want. If I had been made privy to what was going on before it happened then I would have vehemently urged them out of it because it's not actually helping and just making things worse.

But again, we can't change things that have already happened. All we can do is act now and choose how we will act in the future.

It is what it is. This is the point we've come to. This is the end on the matter. We've been trying to let things settle and be done for over two weeks and things keep amping up to the next big chunk of drama. Personally, I'm ready to get back to what's actually important.

Imagine how many posts could be made in the time this took to write? In the time it took you to read it? In the collected total time people have devoted towards this?

In any case, some people probably have some thinking to do. That's really all that's left. And that's why this news post has been so thorough. I'm letting that be and getting back to what's important. I'd encourage everyone else to do the same.

There's better things to devote your time on, at Hyakuji or elsewhere, and we don't need to waste time and space in the chatbox arguing the matter among ourselves. Imagine what that looks like to a bright eyed new person who could become a long standing member sharing in all that we do and making Hyakuji better for it?

If you've got something to say about all of this, positive, negative otherwise... This thread is the place to do; don't slog it into the chatbox. All I ask is that you keep in mind the rules we all hold ourselves to, be respectful and don't flame. Nobody needs to be attacked. If you're feeling righteous on all this, share it out with like-minded individuals; I assure you there's plenty regardless of what you're specifically charged up over.

Plenty of bad choices have been made across the board, and remember I count myself on that board too, let's choose a good choice going forward.

In the end, the choice is yours on what you decide to do and how you handle what's happened going forward. The Staff's official position and my own have been made clear. Our site is open. Our reasoning and intentions are clear. There's nothing to hide. The bannings have been made clear. What's going to happen going forward has been made clear. That's all. Eventually, this too will be a distant memory only a few of us even bother to recall.

Hyakuji will go on either way, it always does.

Suppose we haven't had much news-worthy in awhile. I have added two new pieces of coding to the forum; one by request and one I came across myself. I think both are pretty handy additions.

#1: You can now PM multiple users at once. This should be handy for coordinating personal plot details or for Group Leaders. There's now a Multiple User option when composing a PM. Despite what is shown, you cannot click to send to entire user groups (this involved utilizing AJAX and Zetaboards has since restricted the use of AJAX with the member list), but entering usernames where it prompts will work to mass-send a PM.

I don't think I need to say this, but anyone abusing the Mass-PM system for spam or other nefarious schemes will be banned from the site. This is for added convenience of all. Abusing it to inconvenience people won't be tolerated.

#2: I added a script that will prompt users before leaving a page if they have entered text into a post or PM box. Ever accidentally clicked a link and lost your post? Ever accidentally pressed the back button on your mouse? Ever accidentally clicked X in the corner of the browser?

Now you can never lose a post barring an all out crash (which gets into larger problems anyways.)

ENJOY~

EDIT: As always, new codes mean potentially new problems. If you experience what you feel is a bug or an obviously debilitating problem then report it here or get in contact with me via PM/IM so I can look into it.

Finale: Till The End of Time BANNER CONTEST + INFO

Posted by Hiro_Tsukasa (Admins) at Dec 19 2012, 04:49 PM. 21 comments

Like our halfway point adventure, I'll likely be starting the season finale in the near soonish just to stagger things so we have plenty of time to wrap everything up on time. For the time being, until it is ready to go, you can all help out by getting in on the BE ALL END ALL of banner contests this season: http://hyakujihigh.net/topic/5026515/1/

As for the Finale structure itself, I don't want to give too much away but there are a few hints in the banner contest. We'll begin with a Prologue that starts Faculty only and then incorporates anyone wanting to take part. This is open for all participants whether you took place in a Time Stone Arc or not. Remember to consider posting speed as a gauge of how many characters you bring.

The meat of the event is going to be two threads. One open for any and a smaller scale one that will feature one member from each Time Stone Arc group. If you're interested in participating in the smaller scale thread then post here with the character name and what Arc they took part in (along with its number please for my sake).

Any questions/concerns, lodge them here.

Major Rules Revision

Posted by Hiro_Tsukasa (Admins) at Dec 12 2012, 05:58 AM. 8 comments

BIG NEWS~

Yes, my hiatus is still running till the end of the week when my final Final goes down. However, I have been working on some behind the scenes stuff for Hyakuji; naturally. Back in the Summer I had a long list of things I really wanted to get done. One of those was revising Hyakuji's rules.

It's a long overdue process. Since the site began over seven years ago to this day the rules have just constantly evolved and been added to and changed by a myriad amount of people. During this entire time, the rules were never edited for consistency or to shore up certain areas. I know for some time it's probably been a small issue for the site, mostly in regards to new members (I've had various reports that the rules as they were came off as off-putting or aggressive against new people) so this was pretty important in my opinion.

Since we've had so many incremental updates with no version changes (though they should have been), I decided just to slap this up to a fresh level. I now present you with the Shin Hyakuji High School rules VERSION 03:

RULES V3.0.

What's different? I compiled a Changelog as I went to share with everything the transformation. But first let me detail some of my goals going in:

1) To make the rules have a consistent tone. I, we, the Staff. We had it all. I tried to swap everything over to a nice neutral The Staff.

2) To make the rules friendlier. Wow, I am not surprised some people felt the rules seemed threatening. So much harshness was in there and while I value being direct, it was a little too hot for fresh eyes in my opinion.

3) To make sure the rules were updated fully. In some areas here and there old rules and holdovers still remained. This can be confusing.

4) To streamline things. We used massive paragraphs to detail some things. And while for some aspects this is needed, for others a simple sentence or two gets the job done. Another comment on the rules that we get often is that it's a heavy read. I wanted to really plug down the word count into something more manageable for new members to navigate.

5) Natural updates. As you know the rules frequently evolve to fit trends on the site. Several were overdue.

So here's the Changelog, I added clarifications in parenthesis where I thought it was warranted:

Quote:

Changelog
-Edited for proper grammar.

-Edited for consistent voice (one tense).

-Edited for tonal consistency (a more friendly, less threatening tone).

-SKIPMO is removed, teachers now handle punishments individually.

-48 Hour Combat Rule removed (never comes up and has only appeared in the past few years as a unique Tourney exclusive rule anyways; which is where it can stay)

-Removed some of the very specific combat rule bans imposed by Triyun that no longer have relevance (Ex: Kimwari clarifications)

-Removed many redundant entries (repeats of rules already stated, I think we told people not to bug staff about their profiles roughly 5 times throughout the text)

-Removed the multiple and quite frequent droning warnings of punishment (this ties into the tonal consistency)

-Updated Dorm rules to reflect current situation

-Clarified that class thread updates will be posted in the Intercom (we'll be implementing Erin and several other's suggestion about a persistent thread for info on classes because it's just more convenient for all; just not got that side of things set up yet)

-Updated RRPG/Tabletop Area and Dice Roller Code clarifying it is not relevant to the main site and suggesting those not interested to skip that segment to avoid confusions we get from time to time.

-Added convenient hotlinks. When we mention the character template in text, it links to it; for example.

-Removed character swapping rules (no limits, no restrictions, but I will be leaving it to each Staffer's discretion to "cut someone off" who abuses this extensively in the manner that forced the rule's creation)

Rules v2.2 Word Count: 7023
Rules v3.0 Word Count: 4990
Total Reduction: 2033 Words

I'd like to ask everyone to take some time in the next week or so and review the new rules. It should take you considerably less time~

If you have any productive suggestions that I can use to further shore up things (little bits I missed, rephrasing, additions) for this new edition then post in this thread.

HyakuFest: START

With the opening ceremonies speech done, the festival is ready to start. The first phase will be the BOOTHS. I will let everyone post simply enjoying the booths for a few days to start things off. However the TEAM BATTLE will start soon. So don't get into too much if you're worried about limited time.

This is how we will proceed

TO ANYONE RUNNING A BOOTH:

Please post a short thread titled BOOTH RULES: [BOOTH NAME]
Then a short way for your booth to be used.

SUCH AS: if it's a food booth people can just post getting food and come and go, however if it's something more elaborate explain how they can join your booth and participate.

ONCE THE RULES ARE UP THE BOOTH IS FAIR GAME. Post away. But DO NOT POST IN A BOOTH UNTIL THE RULES ARE UP.

Everyone good? OKAY. Let's get it started!

Chapter 7: Rise Of The Iron Man SIGN-UP

We are ready to launch the 7th and FINAL Time Stone Arc. Jonny will be over this one as the students are tossed into the grim darkness of World War II. This arc will be accepting 5 characters on this.

You should know the drill by this point... you need to post here with the character you want to go and also please note if you've had any characters go on previous Time Stone Arcs (if you lie about this and we find out then for shame :| ) to save Jonny time in deciding. Priority on who gets selected will follow the same guideline we've been using from the start:

1) Players that have yet to participate in any Time Stone Arc.
2) Players that have participated, but using a character that hasn't.
3) FREE GAME

Class System Revamp (Again) + More

Posted by Hiro_Tsukasa (Admins) at Oct 16 2012, 04:51 AM. 13 comments

Yup, it's happened again. However, this time perhaps for the better. BUT FIRST SOME AWESOME UNRELATED NEWS:

Everyone please give congrats to Fin who has graduated from Initiator to full blown Moderator status.

Now, the meat of this announcement. We've revised the Class System again. Let's be honest, the day based period things wasn't working. We all kinda know that in the back of our mind. It was clunky and didn't mesh with the rest of the site which abandoned the idea of forced days for abstract roleplaying with player/plotrunner-crafted continuity.

So this revamp had a few goals in mind:
-To get rid of the clunky and confusing day system.
-To keep classes an important part of the forum.
-To bring the Class System more in line with the current evolutions of the forum.
-To free up teachers to have more control over their classes and less stress about forming within a tight schedule.

The rules and profile template have been updated, here's the segment quoted for convenience:

Quote:

School Schedule
Since time is abstracted for the forum and continuity is set by linked plotlines or by each player for their own characters, classes follow a similar flow. Each student character will have 3 classes that they focus on among a current pool of eight courses. These focus on electives or more interesting classes; from a roleplaying perspective. This is not to say these are the only classes that go on. Standard things like English and Math go on as well, but are assumed to take place "off camera." We merely roleplay the most interesting "snapshots" of a school day.

Classes will be ran regularly by the teachers over them. These will be announced via the News forum so always keep an eye there. Classes can sometimes build towards tests or other exams (usually of a practical nature) so get involved and do your best.

You can choose from the following classes:

  • Phys Ed
  • Science
  • Cooking
  • Survival Studies
  • Supernatural Studies
  • History
  • Advanced Demonology
  • The Arts

So long and short... what changed?

1) Day System is gone: This was a hold over from the site days of long ago. Rather than having periods, each student will pick their home room and then just three classes they want to participate in among all eight available courses. All the previous stuff about boring classes being assumed and etc. will persist.

2) There is only one section of a class: Without the Class Periods, there's no need for multiple sessions of a class. Yes, they've all been condensed into one class. However, student characters are no longer restrained in their class choices by the period arrangement.

3) Teachers will set up and manage their classes: As they see fit, teachers will make their class threads and announce them via this News forum. Home Room will continue to happen as needed. Teachers will just need to hold class at some sort of regular interval so the classes are active.

This isn't set in stone yet (something like once every month or two???). Once we see how it goes, we'll be able to pin it down. This has the added benefit of teachers that have a lot they want to do can really speed through multiple classes at their own pace. In this sense, they are now similar to how Clubs/Orgs work to some degree.

4) Intercom: will now be used for IC announcements and will also be opened up for club use. Want to play up recruitment drives, announcing club events or other stuff? Get in touch with the Staff and okay it and go for it. Hell, I'd like to see a club take major advantage of it. How about school news? Or a weekly radio program of IC school gossip?

====

As an end result, everyone gets to redo their schedule to reflect this change. If you look at the new profile template the way I changed things was that the schedule looks like this:

Quote:

Homeroom:
1)
2)
3)

Just use the same format and take a free redo. Remember your choices are free and you don't have to worry about any overlap. Pick the 3 you want best for each character. Nothing new is ever perfect, so we'll clarify things further and squash bugs as they appear. Bare with us, we'll make it more awesome together~

Finally, I'd like it if all the teachers could kick off their first class session under this new format as soon as is convenient for them (once this news post has sunken in with everyone). It might seem overwhelming to have all 8 going at once, but we need to begin seeing how this goes. Over time I imagine it will level off with some classes going at various times just based on when teachers decide to start new class threads.

If you have questions or anything not clear feel free to ask them here.
